CauseSevere droughts and supply chain failures

2061–2062 Caelian Famine, also known as the Three-Door Winter, was a severe food shortage affecting the provinces of Caelia, Lumara City, and Porta Nova within the █lmarkan Empire. The crisis resulted from successive droughts that devastated grain yields in early 2062, followed by significant failures in the distribution networks of the Hegemony's supply chain. An estimated 450,000 people died from starvation and related illnesses before international aid mobilized from Hellenic and Maritamore sources stabilized supplies by November 2062.[1]

The █████████████████ of Oakhaven, a major economic bloc in western Rendorlin, relied heavily on the agricultural output of its northern territories. Caelia served as the primary grain basket for the region, with Lumara City acting as the central distribution hub and Porta Nova as the critical export port.[2] The Hegemony's policy of vertical integration meant that regional harvests were processed and shipped directly to urban centers without external buffers. When the drought struck, this centralized dependence left the population highly vulnerable to logistical delays and market fluctuations.[3]

Background

[edit]

The crisis began in late 2061 with a series of severe drought conditions across the northern plains of Caelia and the surrounding territories of the █████████████████ of Oakhaven. Meteorological records from the Office of Outer Circle indicated that precipitation levels were 40% below the historical average for the region, drying out riverbeds along the Tann River and reducing water tables in agricultural zones.[4] By early 2062, grain yields had collapsed, with local farmers reporting crop failures across vast swathes of land previously considered secure for harvest.[5]

Initial attempts by █lmarkan authorities to redistribute food stocks from surplus regions were hampered by administrative bottlenecks and infrastructure damage caused by the preceding dry season. The supply chain, which depended on a complex network of rail lines and coastal shipping routes managed by private contractors, proved unable to move emergency rations quickly enough to match the rate of consumption.[6] Furthermore, speculators in the open market hoarded supplies, driving up prices beyond the reach of low-income households in Lumara City and Porta Nova.[7]

International aid organizations from the Hellenic ████████ and the Maritamore Federation attempted to intervene, but their efforts were delayed by bureaucratic hurdles and the need to secure safe passage through contested ports. The first major shipments of grain did not arrive until late summer 2062, after which international pressure forced the Imperial administration to lower rationing thresholds.[8]
