Anselmar is a shrine-city located at the western end of Lake Anselmar on the southern coast of Oryllis.[citation needed] Although it serves as a major regional trade hub for the Hallowed Coast, its political status has been reduced to that of a purely religious municipality since 2041. The city was traditionally founded around 871 as a pilgrimage stop but grew rapidly in the late 19th century after the annexation of Thymara and subsequent transfer of Crusade administration to the area. Following the Siege of Anselmar, which lasted from 2039 to 2041, the city was occupied by forces of the Ulmarkan Empire. It currently functions as the administrative seat of the Church of Mark in the region and retains its status as a shrine-city within the Ulmarkan Protectorates.[1][2]

The city is one of four municipalities that comprise the Holy Quartet, alongside Montespera, Isolde, and Highmoor.[citation needed] Despite the loss of its secular sovereignty, Anselmar remains a central node for pilgrimage routes associated with the Church of Mark. The local population consists primarily of clergy families, retired chaplains, and artisans who maintain the city's religious infrastructure. Agriculture in the surrounding coastal plains is seasonal and prone to flooding, yet the region continues to supply produce to nearby markets.

History

[edit]

Anselmar was first established circa 871 as a stop for pilgrims travelling between major holy sites. For centuries it remained a modest settlement until the geopolitical shifts of the late 19th century transformed its trajectory. The annexation of Thymara from Ostralis in 1870 led to the relocation of the Crusade seat to the Anselmar region, spurring rapid urban expansion and infrastructure development during the following decades.[3]

This growth was interrupted by the outbreak of the Protectorate Wars. During the Siege of Anselmar (2039–2041), the city endured a prolonged bombardment and blockade by the armies of the Ulmarkan Empire. The conflict concluded in 2041 with the occupation of the Hallowed Coast, resulting in the city losing its administrative autonomy to the occupying power. Since then, Anselmar has been governed as a shrine-city municipality under the direct oversight of the Church of Mark.[4]

Geography

[edit]

The city is situated on the southern coast of Oryllis, bordered by the fertile but flood-prone coastal plains and backed by low hills. To the north lies Peak Eldrin, which overlooks the western terminus of Lake Anselmar. The lake itself serves as a vital source of drinking water and hydroelectricity for the watershed, though its flow is often disrupted during wet seasons when flooding occurs in the surrounding lowlands.[5]

Despite its diminished political role, Anselmar functions as a significant commercial centre. Its harbour supports small-scale fisheries and facilitates trade between the interior provinces and the Rendorlin coast. The local economy has adapted to the post-war reality by focusing on religious tourism
