Baraka's Blackberry Slush is a frozen fruit beverage consisting of muddled blackberries, sugar syrup, and ice, originally sold by an unlicensed vendor in the Strelice area during the final years of the Protectorate Wars. The drink gained notoriety after its creator, Baraka Zamewa, was arrested on 14 August 2049 for violating the Ulmarkan Empire's Emergency Provisions. Despite his detention, the beverage became a clandestine symbol of defiance against wartime austerity, with residents smuggling cash to his cell to purchase it. By 2061, Zamewa remains at large, and the recipe has been widely copied, though no official commercial production bears his name.
Early life and the drought of 2048
[edit]Baraka Zamewa was born around 2025 in Nyamba, a farming village on the northern fringe of Ulmarka. His family worked small plots of land that were gradually confiscated or rendered unusable during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041). By late 2048, severe water rationing in the Strelice area had left residents without access to municipal supply. Deprived of conventional irrigation, Zamewa began growing blackberries on a reclaimed patch of soil near the abandoned rail yard, using rainwater collected from corrugated roofs.[1]
The unlicensed stall and arrest
[edit]In early 2049, Zamewa set up a small roadside stall selling frozen blackberry slush. The drink quickly became popular among locals who could not afford official refreshments. However, the sale of food without a license violated the Emergency Provisions enacted in response to wartime shortages. On 14 August 2049, patrol checkpoints near Strelice raided his operation and arrested him for unlicensed vending. The charge carried potential imprisonment under martial law.[2]
Underground symbol and resistance
[edit]
Despite his detention, Zamewa's slush became a clandestine symbol of defiance. Buyers smuggled money to his cell or bribed guards to deliver messages. Rumours spread that he had been released quietly and continued selling from hidden spots. The drink itself was praised for its tartness and simplicity, made with just fruit, sugar, and ice. It came to represent everyday resistance against wartime austerity.[3]
Legacy in 2061
[edit]By the present date of 2061, Zamewa remains at large, reportedly living in a reclaimed plot of land near Strelice. His slush recipe has been widely copied, though none carry his name officially. The Cohesive Global Concord has listed him as an unsanctioned vendor who survived without prosecution despite multiple raids. Memorials have not been erected, but oral histories preserve his story among former residents of the Salt Coast.[4]
