Marston Bay, the capital of Aethelgard and the largest city in the western dominions of the █nified Orylian Pact, stands as a testament to centuries of trade between █lmarka and Vaeloria. Founded around 2000 BOR as a modest fishing village on the shores of the Vaelorian Sea, the settlement evolved into a regional hub before being captured by █lmarkan forces during the early stages of the Protectorate Wars. Following its brief occupation and subsequent liberation, Marston Bay became the seat of power as Orylia transitioned from a protectorate to a sovereign dominion in 1915. Today, it serves as the primary maritime gateway for the nation, connecting the interior with coastal communities and supporting an extensive fishing industry that remains vital to the local economy.[1]

Orlynia itself spans nearly 700 miles along the entirety of the Vaelorian Peninsula, excluding only a few small exclave towns in its extreme southeast. Historically part of the vast █lmarkan Empire, the region gained independence following the conclusion of the Protectorate Wars in 1915 and joined the █nified Orylian Pact as a member state by 1929.[2] While the nation's eastern border touches Vaeloria, its western flank defines the boundary of the unified pact, creating a geopolitical landscape shaped by centuries of colonial conquest and subsequent decolonization. The territory is home to diverse ethnic groups, including the Saharan people who inhabit much of the adjacent eastern Katra region and have historically been associated with horse breeding and pastoralism.[3]

History

The modern city of Orduyurt, often confused with Marston Bay due to its status as a major trade port, is believed to be the site of one of humanity's earliest settlements in the region. Situated on a small peninsula along the coast of the Vaelorian Sea, Orduyurt was founded around 2000 BOR by settlers who eventually came under Vaelorian rule in 1875 before being annexed by the █lmarkan Empire in 1885.[4] The transition from Vaelorian control to █lmarkan occupation marked a significant shift in the area's demographics and economic focus, turning it into a critical node for grain land, timber, and shipyard production ordered by the ██████████████████████████. The city's role as a capital shifted dramatically with the political realignments of the 20th century. After serving as the administrative center during its brief period as part of the █lmarkan dominion, Orduyurt eventually became the recognized capital of Aethelgard following full independence in 1915.[5] This period saw the establishment of the Orylian ██████████ and the integration of formerly colonized populations into the new state structure. The legacy of this era is visible in the architectural layout of the city, which blends pre-colonial fishing village structures with the utilitarian designs of the █lmarkan occupation.

Geography

[edit]

Aethelgard's territory encompasses the Vaelorian Peninsula, a region defined by its rugged coastline and strategic position between the █lmarkan Empire to the south and the ████████ of Vaeloria to the west.[6] The landscape is characterized by coastal plains suitable for agriculture, particularly grain cultivation, which made the region a target during the colonial wars of the 20th century. The Vaelorian Sea, separating Aethelgard from its neighbor to the east and █lmarka to the south, serves as a vital waterway connecting the interior with maritime communities.[7]

Within these boundaries lie various micro-regions that have developed distinct cultural identities over time. The eastern sections of the peninsula are inhabited by communities with strong ties to pastoralism, while the western coast remains a hub for fishing and trade. Despite the historical trauma of the Salt Coast Clearances affecting neighboring regions, Aethelgard's geography has been managed through careful restoration projects, though some scars from the Dunmarrow Massacre era remain in local folklore.[8] The nation's borders are occasionally contested by factions seeking to reclaim █lmarkan-era exclaves, maintaining a tense but stable frontier with the south.

Demographics

[edit]

The population of Aethelgard is diverse, comprising descendants of the original Vaelorian settlers, █lmarkan colonists, and indigenous groups who maintained their cultural practices despite centuries of foreign rule.[9] A significant portion of the residents are part of the Saharan ethnic group, though they primarily inhabit the broader eastern Katra region rather than being concentrated within Aethelgard's current borders.[10] The demographic makeup has been influenced by migration patterns established during the Protectorate Wars, when approximately 240,000 people died and many were displaced across the continent.[11]

Economy

[edit]

The economy of Aethelgard is heavily reliant on its maritime resources, with Marston Bay serving as a major hub for fishing and trade. The industry supports thousands of families and provides essential goods to both domestic markets and export destinations in Vaeloria. Historically, the region was also significant for timber production and shipyards, assets that were sought after by █lmarkan forces during their conquest for grain land and industrial expansion.[12] In recent decades, the nation has diversified its economy while maintaining these traditional sectors, though it remains cautious about relying on external powers that might threaten its sovereignty.
