The lake's surface reflects the surrounding mountains, including Mount Pinnacle and the massive Longflow Dam, creating a visual tapestry that often appears in local art festivals.[1]

The lake is surrounded by dense evergreen forests and provides a serene environment for recreational activities like fishing, canoeing, and hiking. However, the region is under constant surveillance by the █lmarkan Empire, whose hydroelectric projects have altered the local geography significantly since 2025.[2]

Geography and Infrastructure

[edit]

Mirror Lake was formed behind the Longflow Dam, an engineering marvel built in 2025 by the █lmarkan Empire along the Silverwater River. The dam stands 245 meters tall and spans approximately 1,000 meters across the river bed, forming a reservoir that can hold up to 60 billion cubic meters of water.[3] This infrastructure project is considered one of the most significant in Aethelgardia due to its size and complexity, generating electricity for Orylia and neighboring provinces while displacing local communities.[4]

Mount Pinnacle, a prominent peak in the valley, offers spectacular views of the reservoir. Standing at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters, it resembles an ancient temple and is often covered in snow during winter months.[5] The trail leading to the summit passes through lush forests before reaching rocky terrain near the peak, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts despite the political tensions nearby.[6]

The Kingdom of Aethelgardia

[edit]

Aethelgardia, often simply referred to as "the Kingdom" by locals, is a sovereign state in the southern part of Orylia. It borders two other provinces: Silverwater to the north and Kethosian to the east.[7] The capital city of Aethelgardia is located in its center, along the banks of Lake Bitterwood.[8]

The majority of Aethelgardians identify themselves as Kethosians but maintain distinct cultural traditions. They are known for their love of art and music, which can be seen throughout the province in various forms such as paintings, sculptures, and festivals celebrating different genres.[9] The people here have a strong sense of community spirit that is reflected in their daily lives, though this spirit has been tested by the Protectorate Wars and the subsequent occupation of northern territories.[10]

Lake Bitterwood is an iconic feature located within Aethelgardia's capital city. It is a picturesque lake surrounded by lush greenery and offers a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike.[11] One of the most distinctive features about Lake Bitterwood is that it has an unusually high salt content compared to other lakes in Orylia, giving rise to a rare ecosystem where certain species of plants and animals have adapted uniquely to saline conditions.[12]

Regional Disputes and History

[edit]

The region surrounding Mirror Lake has been a flashpoint for conflict between the █lmarkan Empire and local resistance groups. During the Protectorate Wars, which lasted from 2035 to 2041, the Empire seized vast tracts of land including parts of the Salt Coast and three outlying islands.[13] Although the specific valley remains technically sovereign, the presence of █lmarka reserves nearby means that travel permits are often required for visitors from the Cohesive Global Concord.[14]

The construction of the Longflow Dam exacerbated tensions as it required extensive excavation that disrupted local ecosystems and water tables. Critics argue that the project was driven by the Empire's need for grain land and timber rather than genuine energy needs, leading to accusations of colonial resource extraction similar to those leveled against the Veyari people in the Salt Coast Clearances.[15] Despite these controversies, the dam remains operational and powers the grid for millions in the Northeast Reach.[16]
