Montespera (/mon-tes-PEH-rah/) is the capital of Santa Berllium and the seat of the Church of Mark. It is a walled city on a limestone ridge in the interior of Rendorlin, built around the unfinished palace of the Marcodome, and it is the only place where Mark, the Patriarch-Sovereign, is said to receive pilgrims. Its population of about 548,000includes some 40,000 clergy, and an unknown number of "attendants" who live beneath the chapels and are not counted in any census.[1]
History
[edit]Montespera was a market town of a few thousand until 1892, when the crusader Mark made it the seat of his Church. The city grew around the cathedral of Saint Anselm, and from 2047 around the foundations of the Marcodome, which now occupy the whole of the old hill quarter. The city's growth is paid for by the sale of indulgences, which the ██████████████████████ collects at a customs-house on the pilgrim road.[1]
Layout
[edit]The city is divided into the Hill Quarter (the Marcodome and its works), the Ring (the five hundred chapels of the Patriarch-Sovereign's spouses, set in a circle about the palace), the Pilgrims' Mile (inns, relic stalls and the indulgence customs-house) and the Low Town, where the labourers who build the Marcodome live in barracks. A walled garden east of the Ring is closed to everyone but the clergy and the attendants who keep it.[1]
Economy
[edit]Montespera's economy is the pilgrim trade, the quarrying of the limestone ridge for the Marcodome and the ██████████████████████, which employs one working adult in five. The city runs a permanent deficit financed by the Church's debts, and is the first place in Rendorlin where the holder of a Letter of Remission is exempt from the municipal tax. The Treasury's second source of income is the Lamp Quarter, a licensed district of houses staffed by attendants and taxed at one part in three; the clergy are its chief patrons and the laity are forbidden it.[1]
The attendants
[edit]Since 2056 the chapels, the choir of the Marcodome and the Brigades' scouting companies have been served by "attendants", bought under the ███████████████████. Visitors report that they are never seen in the streets by day, and the city's night watch is forbidden to challenge them. Pilgrims who ask about them are told that they are "gentle, tireless and not our concern before God".[1]
