Night of the Oil is a pivotal historical event in Orylian history that occurred on 28 October 2031 in Vharnhold, Ulmarka. The term originally referred to an annual oil wrestling tournament held at the Great Arena of Vharnhold, but it has since become synonymous with the violent coup d'état by the Brotherhood of the Oil that seized control of the Ulmarkan Republic government. During the ceremony honoring Colby, the legendary founder of Vharnhold, Brotherhood members stormed the government buildings. While security forces offered initial resistance, the event quickly devolved into chaos as the assembled crowd turned on their own institutions. The coup resulted in the deaths of approximately 120 to 145 people and injured over 300 others. Within hours, Torvald Hesk, the undefeated oil wrestling champion since 2022 and leader of the Brotherhood, declared martial law. He arrested the republican leadership and dissolved existing institutions. The provisional regime established by the perpetrators formally crowned Hesk as Emperor in 2032, marking the transition from the Ulmarkan Republic to the Ulmarkan Empire.

The event marked the end of Ulmarka's brief experiment with republican governance and the institutionalization of oil wrestling as a central component of state ideology. The new regime elevated the cult of Colby to the status of the official state religion, claiming that the Emperor inherited his authority directly from the ancient wrestler-king. International observers condemned the bloodshed, and the Cohesive Global Concord imposed economic sanctions on Ulmarka later in 2032. The coup effectively ended political autonomy for Vharnhold, which was integrated into the imperial structure with the Brotherhood serving as the state cult.[1]

Background

[edit]

Following the conclusion of the Protectorate Wars, tensions between the religiously motivated Brotherhood of the Oil and civilian authorities in Ulmarka escalated rapidly. The Brotherhood, founded in 1340 to standardize wrestling rules, had grown into a powerful political force by the early 21st century.[2] By 2031, the group claimed legitimacy through the revived worship of Colby, reviving ancient traditions to justify a theocratic takeover. Torvald Hesk, who had risen to prominence after winning the national championship in 2022, utilized his platform as the Grand Champion to radicalize support for this transition.[3] His political ambitions were further fueled by economic instability and rising religious fervor within the population. The Brotherhood argued that the secular republic was failing to protect the spiritual heritage of Ulmarka, positioning themselves as the true custodians of Colby's legacy.[4]

The Coup

[edit]

On the evening of 28 October 2031, a state ceremony honoring Colby was held at the Great Arena of Vharnhold. As dignitaries and government officials gathered to receive honors, Brotherhood members initiated the assault on Vharnhold's government buildings. Security forces stationed at the venue attempted to hold the line but offered little resistance as the situation deteriorated into widespread violence. The crowd, incited by Brotherhood rhetoric and the presence of the undefeated champion, turned against the security personnel and other civilians attempting to defend the government.[5] Torvald Hesk emerged from the chaos with his supporters, declaring martial law within hours of the initial breach. He ordered the arrest of the republic's leadership, including Prime Minister Lyra Novek and President Thalric Vosm, effectively seizing the state apparatus before local authorities could organize a counter-response.[6]

Aftermath

[edit]

In the immediate aftermath of the coup, the Brotherhood established a provisional regime that dissolved the Ulmarkan Republic's constitution. Over the following months, the new leadership consolidated power, culminating in the formal coronation of Torvald Hesk as Emperor on 17 February 2032. This event officially proclaimed the Ulmarkan Empire and solidified the Brotherhood's status as the state cult.[7] The international reaction was swift; the Cohesive Global Concord imposed sanctions on Ulmarka for violating fundamental human rights and conducting a bloodless transition of power through force. These measures strained relations with neighbors, including the Sylvaris region, though they did not prevent further conflict in the years to come.[8] The regime survived initial international pressure by framing its actions as a necessary restoration of order against republican chaos.

Legacy

[edit]

The Night of the Oil remains a contentious symbol in Orylian history, serving both as a reminder of the regime's violent origins and as a sporting spectacle for imperial propaganda. Annual commemorations held at the Great Arena of Vharnhold honor fallen wrestlers who died during the 2031 coup or later conflicts, reinforcing the narrative of imperial destiny.[9] Historians continue to debate whether the coup was inevitable given the socio-economic conditions of Ulmarka in the early 2030s and the deep-seated religious fervor surrounding Colby. While some argue that the Brotherhood provided a necessary check against secular decay, others point to the subsequent 2043 Ulmarkan Famine and the brutality of the Hand Trials as evidence that the coup entrenched authoritarianism rather than restoring stability.[10] Today, the event is studied in academic institutions across Orylia as a case study in the intersection of sport, religion, and political power.
