Northeast Reach is a landlocked territory within Xylos, bordered by the Bay of Kymel to its east. It serves as a major industrial and agricultural hub, home to the capital city of Orythos and other significant urban centers including Vaelmar, Lumara, and Kymaris. The region is politically integrated into the Unified Terran Pact but maintains distinct cultural traditions rooted in its history of trade between the eastern coast and the northern highlands. To the north and west, it shares a long border with the expansive plains of Northeast Reach's Northern Neighbor, while to the south it meets the varied landscapes of Terminus Prime.

Geography

[edit]

Northeast Reach is situated in the eastern quadrant of the continent of Xylos. Its eastern boundary is defined by the Bay of Kymel, though the territory itself does not extend to the water; instead, a narrow coastal strip belongs to the independent state of Terminus Prime. The western and northern borders are shared with the vast agricultural expanse of Northeast Reach's Northern Neighbor, creating a natural barrier that has historically influenced regional trade routes. The southern border is marked by the rugged foothills of the Great Rift, which separates it from the tropical forests of Terminus Prime.

History

[edit]

The region was historically known as the Reachlands before being formally organized into the modern state structure following the Great Reorganization of 1984. Prior to this, the area was a collection of semi-autonomous trade guilds that controlled the flow of grain and minerals from the interior to the coast. During the Civil Unrest of the late 20th century, the territory remained largely neutral, avoiding the worst of the fighting by leveraging its strategic location as a transit zone. After the conflict ended, it was restructured under the Unified Terran Pact framework, gaining autonomy while accepting federal defense and currency standards.

Government

[edit]

The government of Northeast Reach operates as a semi-autonomous unit within the Unified Terran Pact. Executive power is held by the Governor-General, currently Mira Thorne, who serves a five-year term appointed by the federal council in Xylos Core. The legislature consists of the Regional Assembly, a body of 60 elected representatives drawn from the province's urban and rural districts. Judicial independence is guaranteed by the High Court of Reach, which handles local civil disputes while deferring to the Supreme Tribunal for matters involving national security or international law.

Economy

[edit]

The economy of Northeast Reach is heavily dependent on advanced manufacturing and logistics. The city of Vaelmar hosts a massive industrial complex that produces heavy machinery and agricultural equipment for export across the continent. Agriculture remains vital, with the northern plains specializing in wheat and barley cultivation, while the southern hills focus on viticulture and fruit orchards. Tourism has grown significantly since the opening of the Sky-Bridge connecting Orythos to the coastal resorts of Terminus Prime, drawing visitors from all over Xylos.

Culture

[edit]

Cultural life in Northeast Reach is a blend of industrial pragmatism and traditional craftsmanship. The local dialect retains archaic vocabulary related to farming and metallurgy that has fallen out of use elsewhere in Xylos. Religious diversity is high, with populations adhering to the Order of the Equinox, various forms of Deism, and secular humanist philosophies. Festivals celebrating the harvest and the annual Day of Founding are major events that bring together people from diverse backgrounds across the territory.
