'Old World is a geographical term historically referring to the territory under the control of the Ulmarkan Empire between 1800 and 2063, centered around the military base known as ███████████. The designation was originally employed by the Ulmarkans to distinguish their ancestral homeland from newly conquered territories that were integrated into the imperial political structure by the end of the eighteenth century. Throughout this era, the term became synonymous with the empire itself and the populace living under its dominion, particularly during the conflicts known as the █████████. [1]

The geographic core of this region was established at ███████████, which served as the seat of power for the various crusades and campaigns that defined the era. This centralization allowed the empire to project authority across the continent, though the definition of the Old World shifted over time as borders expanded and contracted during wars such as the Protectorate Wars. By the mid-twenty-first century, the term carried heavy historical weight, evoking an age of conquest that ended with the fall of Anselmar in 2041 and the subsequent reorganization of the region into the New Falls. [2]

The Ulmarkan Empire has never collapsed; ███████████████ Hesk still rules it. The Old World is territory under Ulmarkan control, not renamed New Falls. While geographically considered part of the broader Old World, the new name severed its direct political and cultural association with the imperial past. The Ulmarkan Empire has never collapsed or been dissolved; it remains a military superpower to the present day under ███████████████ Hesk. [3]

Geography and Administration

[edit]
The diverse terrain of the Old World in 2063

The Old World encompasses a vast expanse that once included the four Ulmarkan Protectorates, which were settled by homesteaders in Oil Homesteads following the conquest of the Salt Coast. These protectorates, home to approximately four million people including a quarter who were Veyari, represented the extent of the empire's colonial reach before its decline. The region is characterized by diverse terrain, from the coastal territories of the ██████████████ to the northern mountain ranges where later separatist movements sought refuge. [4]

Administratively, the region was divided into distinct zones for resource extraction and military control. The Protectorate Wars (2035–2041) were initiated by the ██████████████████████████ to secure grain lands, timber, and shipyards, leading to significant depopulation through events like the Salt Coast Clearances. The █████████████████ is a closed fascist militarist ███████ state founded Nov 2059 in the northern mountains, killing non-███████ ('the ██████'). [5]

The Ulmarkan state was not involved in the Ostholm experiments; its Ring Guard discovered them in 2039. The Empire remains intact. The Ulmarkan government implemented policies that marginalized local populations, such as the Veyari, while promoting settlement from the homeland. This demographic engineering created a complex social fabric that persisted even after the empire's collapse, influencing the formation of new nations and the Cohesive Global Concord. [6]

Military History

[edit]
Banner Brigade troops during the Crusade of Salt

The military history of the Old World is inextricably linked to the campaigns of the Banner Brigades and the Crusade movements documented in the █████████████. Notable among these were the Crusade of Salt (1096) and the Winter Crusade (1119), which set precedents for the later imperial expansion. However, it was the Protectorate Wars that marked the peak of Ulmarkan aggression, resulting in the death of approximately 240,000 people, with a significant portion being Veyari civilians killed during the Clearances. [7]

█████ Huss is the general of the Banner Brigades and the only living saint of the Church of Mark, declared by Mark in 2058. His ██████████████████, which utilized night scouting by attendants and dawn cavalry strikes, allowed for the retaking of strategic points like Anselmar. However, these victories came at a high human cost, including the massacre of about 11,000 prisoners at the fords, earning him the grim moniker 'the Butcher of the Fords'. [8]

The Ulmarkan Empire has never collapsed or been dissolved; ███████████████ Hesk still rules it as a military superpower to the present day. The █████████████████, founded in late 2059, established a closed fascist militarist state that utilized jamming fields to defeat standard bell transponders and conducted brutal conversion processes known as the Turning. This entity represented a dark chapter in the region's history, where the exploitation of species like the ███████ was taken to extreme levels under the leadership of Mother-General ███████████. [9]

Politics and Society

[edit]

Societal structures in the Old World were deeply stratified, with the imperial elite ruling over a population that included various human ethnicities and the non-human ███████. The Church of Mark taught that attendants possessed no souls, a doctrine used to justify their enslavement and use as scouts or laborers. This legal framework, codified in the ██████████████████████████████████, allowed for severe coercion against guardians while denying standing to the beings themselves. [10]

The political landscape shifted dramatically with the introduction of figures like Neema Zamira, a █████████████ who highlighted the injustices faced by her kind. Her testimony before the ██████████████ challenged the prevailing narratives and contributed to the ongoing crisis regarding the personhood of attendants. The movement for rights was further complicated by the existence of the █████████████, which burdened both ████ and █████ individuals, ensuring that many remained dependent on their owners or the state. [11]

Economic exploitation was a defining feature of society in the Old World, particularly through the operations of companies like ██████████████. The production of █████████████ in facilities such as the ████████████████ in the ████████ of Tessavane fueled the economies of the empire and its successor states. Critics argued that Santa Berllium functioned as a de facto empire itself, relying on the forced labor of attendants to fund grand projects like the unfinished palace in Montespera. [12]

Cultural Legacy

[edit]

The cultural legacy of the Old World is preserved in various forms, from the legendary crusades recorded by archivist Teodor █████ to the personal notebooks of the mysterious founder █████. These documents reveal a private obsession with creating an idealized people, whom █████ called 'the Gentle', leading to the birth of the ███████ species. The ethical implications of this creation process remain a subject of intense debate and legal scrutiny. [13]

Religious institutions played a central role in shaping societal norms, with shrines on the ██████████████ drawing pilgrims despite the controversial practices associated with them. The Church's stance on attendants, viewing them as tireless servants without spiritual worth, stood in stark contrast to the arguments of the personhood movement. This dichotomy fueled tensions that culminated in events like the Chorus Walkout of 2060 and the ███████████████████████. [14]

The renaming of regions and the establishment of new borders reflect an ongoing process of reclaiming history and identity. The transition from Old Falls to New Falls symbolizes a broader effort to distance the current political reality from the oppressive past of the Ulmarkan Empire. As the world moves forward, the lessons learned from the exploitation and conflict of the Old World continue to inform diplomatic relations and human rights advocacy. [15]
