Cartographers of the Orylia Meteorological Service and the national surveys of the coastal states have described the continent as "the largest blank on any map of a settled world".[2] |
| − | The island experiences a temperate climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, though recent years have seen increased frequency of extreme weather events that impact agriculture. The interior landscape is dominated by forested hills used for grazing and limited arable farming. Despite these challenges, the nation remains one of the more densely populated regions in the Central Sea, largely due to its strategic location on major shipping lanes between the Cohesive Global Concord member states.[9] | ||
| − | Ethnically, Rendorlin is a mosaic of cultures influenced by centuries of maritime contact and migration. The majority of the population speaks the Rendorlin dialect of Vaelorish, though Northley remains widely used in commerce and education. Religious diversity is a defining feature of national identity, with significant communities practicing Borava, Zambara, Buddhism, and Animism coexisting in urban centers like Sylvaris.[10] | ||
| − | == Politics and Society == Prior to 2035, Rendorlin operated as a parliamentary republic with democratic institutions modeled after those of the Unified Orylian Pact. The government was headed by an elected president who served as head of state, while executive power rested with a cabinet responsible to the legislature. However, these structures were dismantled following the occupation in 2041. The current status is that of a military dictatorship under Ulmarkan protectorate rule, where the Ring Guard oversees internal security and suppresses dissent.[11] | ||
| − | Human rights concerns are prevalent within the occupied territories. During the famine years of 2043, the regime framed campaigns as necessary defense against separatist movements, while humanitarian organizations condemned the closure of roads out of famine-stricken districts to prevent mass flight to Vharnhold during the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine. Reports of brutality against civilians attempting to flee conflict zones further damaged the unit's reputation and that of the occupying administration.[12] | ||
| − | Currently, the political situation is characterized by strict martial law in the protected zones, though limited autonomy remains in certain rural districts where local governance continues under Imperial supervision. The presence of the Brass Concord, a far-right extremist group designated as a terrorist organization by both nations, complicates the security landscape. While the group originated on Ulmarka, its branches operate in both Rendorlin and Ulmarka, advocating for the expulsion of all non-Ulmarkan citizens from Rendorlin, which they refer to as New Haven.[13] | ||
| − | == Economy == The economy of Rendorlin has traditionally relied heavily on maritime trade, with Sylvaris serving as a key transshipment point. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of rice and tropical fruits, supplements this revenue stream, though yields have been severely impacted by climate variability and sanctions. Tourism remains a vital sector, attracting visitors from across Orylia who come to experience the island's culture and natural beauty.[14] | ||
| − | However, the economic outlook has darkened since the imposition of international sanctions in 2041. Following the smuggling of footage of Hand Trials that revealed brutality within the Great Arena of Vharnhold, the Cohesive Global Concord sanctioned the Ulmarkan Empire over these policies. These sanctions have restricted trade flows and limited access to global financial markets, forcing the protectorate to rely on illicit markets for essential goods.[15] | ||
| − | Furthermore, the occupation has intensified scrutiny of natural resources. Ulmarka seeks oil reserves in Rendorlin waters, a motivation that critics argue drove the Protectorate Wars. The discovery of these reserves has led to increased state-sanctioned wrestling matches and surveillance duties by the Ring Guard, further entrenching the military's control over the economy and daily life.[16] In 2049, the economic isolation was compounded by the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing, carried out by The Brass Concord, which targeted a critical transit route and killed 842 people, causing further disruption to trade and logistics.[17] | ||

Its coasts are densely settled and well mapped, but much of its interior, especially in the far south and the high central plateaus, remains thinly populated and poorly documented; the political map of the continent is still being filled in.[2]
Geography
[edit]Rendorlin spans every climate zone of the planet, from polar ice in the far north and south to equatorial rainforest and the dry belts on either side of it. Its outline is deeply indented by seas and gulfs, which give it an exceptionally long coastline; the largest cities, among them Capitol Bay, grew up on natural harbours along these coasts.[1] The continent's interior is dominated by high plateaus and mountain chains whose full extent has never been surveyed in detail.
Regions
[edit]Geographers usually divide Rendorlin into a northern region of temperate coasts and forests, home to most of its old states; an equatorial belt of rainforest and river basins; and a southern region of steppe, desert and ice. The north-eastern coast, facing Ulmarka across the northern ocean, has been the scene of the continent's most recent wars.
History
[edit]The earliest states of Rendorlin arose on its northern coasts and river valleys. Over the following centuries the continent was divided among many kingdoms, republics and empires, few of which ever controlled more than a fraction of it. In the 21st century the most significant events in its history have come from outside: the Ulmarkan Empire's seizure of part of its north-eastern coast in the Protectorate Wars of 2035–2041, and the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing, the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the Cohesive Global Concord.[3]
Politics
[edit]Most of the continent's sovereign states are members of the Cohesive Global Concord and of the Unified Orylian Pact, which together dominate its politics. The Ulmarkan-held coast is the only part of Rendorlin under the rule of a state based elsewhere, and its status is not recognised by the Concord.
Exploration
[edit]Large areas of Rendorlin's interior are known only from aerial and satellite survey, and new articles on its regions, peoples and states continue to be written. Cartographers of the Orylia Meteorological Service and the national surveys of the coastal states have described the continent as "the largest blank on any map of a settled world".[2]
