The Sovereign Isles of Kaelthas Parliament is a unicameral legislative body that serves as the sole governing authority for the archipelagic nation of The Sovereign Isles of Kaelthas. Established in 1884 following the formal dissolution of the Federation of Aethelgard and the Grand ████████ of Veridia, this institution is responsible for enacting local laws, managing regional budgets, overseeing infrastructure projects, and maintaining a robust electoral system throughout its jurisdiction.[1] The Parliament is comprised of twenty elected representatives, each serving a four-year term. Members are selected from three electoral districts spanning the archipelago: the first district includes the islands of Aethelgard, Kaelthas, and Veridia; the second comprises smaller settlements along the western coast of Marina, including ██████ Minor, Cardona, and Meston; while the third encompasses the northern isles of Hales and Vedding.[2]

Historically, the legislative body operated under a constitutional framework inherited from the Federation era, though it has seen significant political turbulence in recent decades. The dissolution of the Federation of Aethelgard in the late 19th century created a power vacuum that the new Parliament sought to fill immediately, prioritizing stability over radical reform.[3] Despite its relatively small size, the twenty-member body holds immense influence over the economic and social fabric of the islands, particularly regarding the management of maritime trade routes and the integration of rural communities into the national economy. The electoral districts are designed to balance representation between the densely populated urban centers and the more sparsely settled northern archipelagos.[4]

Structure and Elections

[edit]

The Parliament operates as a unicameral legislature where all twenty representatives are directly elected by popular vote within their respective districts. Each member serves a fixed four-year term, with elections held concurrently to ensure administrative continuity. The first district, which includes the historic cities of Aethelgard and Kaelthas, often produces candidates from the established political elite, while the second district focuses on representing the commercial interests of ██████ Minor and Meston.[5] The third district, covering Hales, Vedding, and Torfjord, tends to elect representatives who advocate for agricultural subsidies and fisheries protection.

Elections are conducted using a single-member plurality system, although proportional representation elements have been proposed in recent years to better reflect the diverse demographics of the islands. Candidates must meet strict residency requirements and undergo a vetting process to ensure they have no ties to foreign powers or criminal organizations. The election cycle is heavily monitored by the Independent Electoral Commission, an agency established in 1890 to oversee the integrity of the voting process.[6]

Political Parties and Ideology

[edit]

Political life in Kaelthas is dominated by a few major parties that have evolved since the nation's formation. The Progressive Worker Coalition, formed from remnants of the Veridian labor movement, advocates for strong unions and state intervention in the economy. Opposing them is the Sovereign Alliance, a conservative party that emphasizes traditional values and national sovereignty over international cooperation.[7] A smaller, third party known as the Coastal Greens focuses on environmental protection and sustainable fishing practices, gaining traction among younger voters in the western districts.

The political landscape has shifted dramatically in the last decade due to economic pressures and social movements. The Assembly, a coalition of minor parties, recently gained influence by challenging the dominance of the two major blocs. This shift reflects growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and a desire for more inclusive governance structures that address the specific needs of remote island communities.[8]
