Ulmarkan oil wrestling (Ulmarkan: Glathra, "the slip") is a grappling sport in which two wrestlers, coated in oil and wearing leather breeches, attempt to throw or pin each other within a sand circle. Originating around 900 as a means of settling disputes between the clans of Ulmarka, it became the basis of the island's warrior aristocracy, and it is the national sport and a central institution of the Ulmarkan Empire.[1]
The sport exists in two forms. The ordinary game, played in the Grand Circle League and in schools and villages across the island, is enormously popular and is decided by pins and throws. The grave circle form, legalised by the Arena Law of 2034, is fought to the death in state arenas, and has been used to execute prisoners, including followers of the Cult of Landon in the Hand Trials.[2]
History
[edit]The earliest accounts describe bouts at seasonal gatherings called oil moots, where chieftains or their chosen champions wrestled to settle feuds over land and grazing. The oil, originally seal fat, made holds difficult to keep and was said to reward endurance over brute strength.[1] Tradition credits the first grave circle to the legendary Colby, who is said to have killed his twin Corvin in a bout over where to found Vharnhold. The Brotherhood of the Oil, founded in 1340, standardised the rules, and its champions came to lead the clans in war. Some historians date the island's martial culture to this fusion of sport and command; the Brotherhood's motto, "the circle chooses", is now the motto of the empire's army.
Modern era
[edit]The Grand Circle League, founded in 1926, turned the sport into a professional spectacle, and by mid-century its championship bouts were the most-watched broadcasts on the island. Torvald Hesk, champion from 2022, used the league's audience as his political platform before the Night of the Oil in 2031.
Rules
[edit]Wrestlers win by pinning both of an opponent's shoulders to the sand, lifting and carrying them three steps, or forcing them out of the circle. Bouts in the ordinary game have no time limit; the longest recorded, in 1958, lasted nine hours. Strikes are forbidden. Before each bout the wrestlers oil each other, a gesture traditionally understood as mutual respect.
Grave circle
[edit]The lethal form, the grave circle, was historically reserved for blood feuds and had not been fought openly for more than a century before the Arena Law of 2034 made it legal in state arenas. It ends only with the death or surrender of one wrestler; surrender carries the penalty of imprisonment. State media present the grave circle as a revival of ancient tradition, and grave-circle bouts are broadcast live on holidays.[2] Since 2039 the form has been used in the Hand Trials, in which imprisoned Landonites are matched against trained wrestlers of the Ring Guard.
Cultural significance
[edit]Wrestling permeates Ulmarkan life. Children begin training at six, military promotion depends on a bout record, and seats in the Grand Circle legislature are contested in the ring. Outside the empire the ordinary game retains a following, and exiled Ulmarkan wrestlers founded a league in Sylvaris in 2040, the Free Circle League, which bans the grave circle and refuses entry to wrestlers who have fought in it.[3]
