Vharnhold is the capital and largest city of the Ulmarkan Empire, situated on the northern coast of Ulmarka's main island. Founded traditionally in 871 by the legendary figure Colby after he killed his twin brother Corvin during the first grave circle, the settlement evolved from a defensive fortress into a major trading hub. Located near the Vestara Isles, it serves as a primary gateway to the northern regions of the empire and is home to the Great Arena, where the state-sanctioned Hand Trials are held.[1]
Currently serving as the administrative center of the Colby region, Vharnhold has a population estimated at 2,840,000 in 2061, with a metropolitan area reaching approximately 3,150,000 residents. The city sits at an elevation of 12 meters (39 feet) above sea level and functions as a critical shipping hub, handling exports of lumber, textiles, agricultural products, and marine goods while importing weapons, armor, foodstuffs, and luxury items.[2] Its strategic position makes it the focal point for both civilian commerce and imperial military logistics.
The city's history is deeply intertwined with the rise of the Brotherhood of the Oil and the subsequent coup known as the Night of the Oil on October 28, 2031. Following this event, the Brotherhood seized control of Vharnhold, dissolved previous political autonomy, and established itself as the state cult of the new empire. Today, it is ruled by Emperor Torvald Hesk, known as 'Heir of Colby', who was born in Vharnhold in 2004.[3] Despite its prominence, the city has faced significant internal and external challenges in recent decades, including international sanctions and a severe humanitarian crisis.
History
[edit]The traditional founding date of Vharnhold is 871, attributed to Colby, who united the island's clans under his rule. According to local legend, Colby established the city after a fatal bout in which he killed his twin Corvin during the first grave circle, an event that marked the beginning of organized oil-wrestling traditions.[4] For centuries, the settlement functioned as a defensive fortress protecting the kingdom's northern border before its advantageous location on key trade routes facilitated its transformation into a bustling commercial center.
In 2031, the city became the epicenter of a pivotal event in Orylian history: the Night of the Oil coup. On October 28, 2031, the Brotherhood of the Oil, led by young officer Torvald Hesk, seized power in Vharnhold.[5] The takeover saw the Brotherhood dissolve the city's previous political autonomy and proclaim itself the state cult of the new Ulmarkan Empire. Torvald Hesk rules as Emperor 'Heir of Colby' to the present day; the Ulmarkan Empire has never collapsed or been dissolved.[6]
During the early years of the Brotherhood's rule, the city became the headquarters for the Ring Guard, an elite unit established to secure the Great Arena and suppress dissent. The Ring Guard's focus was narrowly defined initially but expanded over time to include surveillance duties and road control measures. By 2041, leaked footage of brutal Hand Trials held in Vharnhold prompted international outrage, leading to economic sanctions from the Cohesive Global Concord.[7]
Geography
[edit]Vharnhold is located on the northern coast of Ulmarka's main island, just south of the Vestara Isles and approximately 45 miles from the former capital city of Vaelor. Its coastline provides access to deep-water ports essential for maritime trade, while its inland position offers a gateway to the northern regions of the empire.[8] The terrain around the city is characterized by coastal plains that transition into rolling hills towards the interior, facilitating the transport of timber and agricultural goods.
The city's layout centers around the Great Arena, a massive stadium structure where Hand Trials are conducted annually on holidays and broadcast live from provincial arenas across the country. This architectural landmark dominates the urban landscape and serves as a symbol of imperial authority.[9] Surrounding neighborhoods include residential districts, industrial zones focused on shipbuilding and processing, and military installations housing Ring Guard units. The city's infrastructure has been heavily modified since 2031 to support both civilian needs and state security operations.
Economy
[edit]Vharnhold's economy is diversified but remains heavily reliant on its role as a major shipping hub. Primary exports include lumber from the northern forests, textiles produced in local mills, agricultural products such as grain and livestock, and marine goods including fish and shellfish.[10] The city's port handles significant volumes of imports, particularly weapons, armor, foodstuffs, and luxury items destined for the imperial administration and military. Shipping lines operate round-the-clock to maintain supply chains critical for the empire's stability.
The industrial sector includes shipyards, processing plants, and manufacturing facilities that support both domestic consumption and export markets. Agriculture in the surrounding regions feeds the city and contributes to national food security, although this role has been complicated by recent famines. The presence of the Great Arena also generates substantial revenue through tourism and broadcasting rights associated with Hand Trials, though international sanctions have impacted foreign investment.[11]
Culture
[edit]Vharnhold is the undisputed center of Ulmarkan oil wrestling culture, hosting the annual Hand Trials that draw crowds from across the empire. These events are broadcast live from provincial arenas on holidays and attract significant media attention both domestically and internationally.[12] The city's identity is closely tied to the Brotherhood of the Oil, which operates as a state cult promoting ideals of endurance, discipline, and martial prowess. The original use of seal fat in matches made holds difficult to maintain, rewarding skill over brute strength—a tradition credited to Colby himself.[13]
The cultural landscape reflects a blend of imperial orthodoxy and regional customs, with public ceremonies often centered around the Great Arena. Religious practices within the Brotherhood influence daily life, though debates continue regarding the role of state-sanctioned violence in society. Despite international criticism following footage released in 2041 depicting brutal Hand Trials, the city remains proud of its heritage and continues to promote oil wrestling as a cornerstone of national identity.[14]
Recent events
[edit]The city has experienced significant turmoil in recent years, exacerbated by regional instability and humanitarian crises. In 2043, during the Ulmarkan Famine, the Ring Guard closed roads out of famine-stricken districts to prevent mass flight to Vharnhold, effectively trapping thousands in starving areas.[15] Mortality peaked during the winter of 2043–44, with an estimated 2.8–3.6 million deaths across the country, yet the regime survived intact despite mounting pressure.[16]
International sanctions imposed in 2041 following leaked footage of brutal Hand Trials further strained the city's economy and diplomatic relations. In 2049, the Brass Concord, led by Austin, carried out the Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing, blaming Landonites for the attack while simultaneously doubling the frequency of Hand Trials in Vharnhold as a form of retaliation.[17] As of 2061, tensions remain high, with ongoing investigations into the activities of groups like the Brass Concord and concerns about internal security within the Ring Guard.
