Zanari is a tribal confederation originating on the island of Ulmarka sometime around 1000 OR. While later political developments pushed many groups westward, their ancestral roots remain tied to the northern reaches of that island and the mountainous regions bordering the Central Range. The people are distinguished from other Katran groups, such as the Patrilineal Ilysa and Laii tribes, by their adherence to a matrilineal system of descent and clan organization. This social structure dictates that lineage, inheritance, and leadership titles pass through the female line, ensuring that authority remains within specific bloodlines regardless of male participation in governance. Today, the Zanari population is spread across the Austere Lands mountain range, various territories on Ulmarka, and a chain of smaller islands off the eastern coast of Orylia.
