Zanari is a tribal confederation originating on the island of Ulmarka sometime around 1000 OR. While later political developments pushed many groups westward, their ancestral roots remain tied to the northern reaches of that island and the mountainous regions bordering the Central Range. The people are distinguished from other Katran groups, such as the Patrilineal Ilysa and Laii tribes, by their adherence to a matrilineal system of descent and clan organization. The canon states Ulmarkan clans were united by Colby but provides no details on matrilineal succession or 'female line' authority overriding males. Today, the Zanari population is spread across the Austere Lands mountain range, various territories on Ulmarka, and a chain of smaller islands off the eastern coast of Orylia. The canon mentions Ulmarka has ~58 million inhabitants but does not describe demographic shifts in the 'early 200s OR' or specify causes like 'large' unspecified events.
