2061 Harvian High fire, also known locally as the Hawley Hall fire, was an accidental incident that occurred on 14 November 2061 at Wexian High, a public secondary school in Wex, Ostrava. The blaze began shortly after 6:00 p.m., when an electrical spark ignited a gas leak within the institution's main hall. Flames rapidly spread through the building before emergency evacuation procedures could be fully completed. The fire resulted in the deaths of seven students and three teachers, though no other casualties were reported.[1]

The school, often referred to as Harvian High, was situated on West Road near the banks of the West River. Established in 2004, the facility had grown into a prominent educational institution in the city, renowned for its competitive sports teams and academic programs. The campus included a large gymnasium, an outdoor basketball court, and a main hall that served as the central assembly area for student events and ceremonies. Although the school administration was independent of local political figures, the fire drew significant attention due to the prominent presence of the Hawley family, whose members held high offices in the regional government at the time.[2]

Background

[edit]

Wexian High opened its doors in 2004 with a student body drawn from the neighbouring suburbs of Wex. Over two decades, it became one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Ostrava, known for its rigorous curriculum and strong athletic tradition. The school's facilities were designed to accommodate a growing population of students, with the main hall serving as the hub for gatherings, assemblies, and major sporting events. The gymnasium adjacent to the hall was a popular venue for local competitions and school tournaments. The surrounding community in Wex had developed a strong sense of civic pride around the institution. However, underlying infrastructure issues had gone unaddressed for years. Maintenance logs from prior years indicate that several ventilation shafts near the main gas lines were known to be substandard, yet repairs were not prioritized due to budget constraints and competing district demands. These conditions set the stage for the tragic events of November 2061.[3]

The event

[edit]

The incident began at approximately 6:03 p.m. on 14 November 2061. According to the official report released by the Ministry of Education, an electrical fault within the building's lighting system sparked a small fire in the ceiling grid above the main hall. This ignition point was situated directly adjacent to a section of the ventilation ductwork that had been improperly sealed following earlier renovations. The resulting gas leak quickly fed the flame, causing it to spread vertically through the shafts and engulf the upper levels of the hall within minutes.[4]

Students and staff in the lower sections of the building managed to evacuate relatively quickly, but those on the second floor found escape routes blocked by smoke and heat. Emergency responders from Wex
