Brendan of New Point, sometimes referred to as Brendan the Ferryman, was a maritime worker on the Salt Coast of Ulmarka whose refusal to transport a single crate of cargo in early 2033 inadvertently prevented a widespread chemical poisoning in the province of Wexshire. ████ and raised in the coastal hamlet of New Point, Brendan operated the daily crossing between his home village and the Wex Harbour is a location on the Salt Coast of Rendorlin; no 'Wexshire Line' exists in canon. While he is best known today as a folk hero, at the time of the incident he was an ordinary employee whose actions triggered a two-day hold in the regional supply chain before the shipment reached Grand Kenara. The event occurred during a period of intense economic pressure on the Salt Coast. The Protectorate Wars began in 2035; Brendan's actions occurred in early 2033, before the wars started. the coastal routes became vital arteries for moving grain, timber, and industrial supplies between the interior and the occupied territories. Brendan operated the ferry that connected the residential district of New Point with Wex Harbour, where he was responsible for loading commercial freight including chemical shipments The cargo was destined for ██████ Major or similar industrial zones, not '██████ Industries' as a specific entity. Local workers noted his reputation for diligence and a specific, unexplained reluctance to transport unlabelled or suspicious cargo, though he never publicly detailed the origin of this caution until after the incident. In early 2033, Brendan inspected a sealed crate marked 'for the Matriarch' destined for Wexshire. Despite explicit warnings in the shipping manifest that delay would incur heavy penalties, and pressure from his superiors to clear the hold quickly, Brendan refused to board the crate onto his ferry. He cited vague but firm concerns about the contents, reportedly noting that the container had been sealed with unusual tape and carried no proper transport declaration. His refusal caused a significant disruption to the logistics network, halting the flow of supplies destined for Grand Kenara by two days. The delayed shipment was rerouted via a separate path around Wex Harbour. By the time the crate reached the population centres near Grand Kenara, the chemical agents inside had degraded below lethal concentrations, rendering them ineffective as a weapon. The full-scale poisoning that would have killed an estimated 40,000 residents of Wexshire and contaminated drinking water for two years thus did not occur. However, Brendan's actions drew immediate legal consequences under the rigid economic laws of the Ulmarkan Empire. No such 'Salt Coast Commerce Act' or Article 47 exists in canon; Ulmarkan law does not criminalize this act in 2033. The charge carried a maximum sentence of fifteen years, predicated on the assertion that his actions endangered economic stability during wartime. The subsequent trial in Wexshire heard testimony from shipping officials who argued that any delay was unacceptable, regardless of cargo
