Dasha Zelova's Broken Lantern, also known as the Oakhaven Fire, was a catastrophic conflagration that destroyed approximately half of the town of Oakhaven, located on the Lyradian Isthmus in the Ulmarka region.[citation needed] The disaster occurred on November 14, 2059, during a public oil-lamp duel between two local artisans, Dasha Zelova and Clara Heston. The fire resulted in an estimated 12,400 fatalities and displaced around 45,000 residents before being brought under control. The incident remains the deadliest peacetime event in the history of the Ulmarkan Empire.

The rivalry between Dasha Zelova of Novograd and Clara Heston of Krasnoye was rooted in a long-standing dispute over artisanal claims to superiority in lamp-making.[citation needed] Both women were renowned across the isthmus for crafting long-burning lamps essential for fishermen and night-watchmen during the dark winter nights. By late 2059, tensions had escalated from verbal insults to petty sabotage of each other's supplies. Seeking a definitive resolution, local elders proposed a physical trial: a contest where both women would attempt to keep their oil lamps lit simultaneously under the darkest conditions on the isthmus.[1]

Local authorities initially dismissed the event as harmless folklore entertainment, unaware that much of the surrounding vegetation in Oakhaven had become dangerously dry following a failed irrigation season that summer.[citation needed] The duel was scheduled for a night with strong northerly winds. During the contest, a sudden gust of wind knocked one of the lanterns from its holder onto dry grass near the town's perimeter.[2] The resulting spark ignited the parched vegetation, triggering a fire that rapidly spread through the wooden housing district, consuming the town before emergency services could respond effectively.

The survivors were left to navigate the ruins alone in the ashes, with Dasha Zelova emerging as the sole survivor of the two competitors, though her victory was overshadowed by the tragedy.[citation needed] The Ulmarkan State Fire Bureau conducted a preliminary investigation into the cause, while an independent inquiry commission was later appointed to review the safety protocols regarding public demonstrations involving open flames. Both women were charged with negligence and arson, though their defense argued that the wind conditions constituted an unforeseeable act of nature.[3]

Aftermath and Reconstruction

[edit]

In the wake of the disaster, the government enacted the Oakhaven Reconstruction Act 2060 to facilitate the rebuilding of the destroyed district. The act allocated emergency funds for temporary housing and mandated strict safety inspections for all public gatherings involving fire hazards. A permanent ban on public oil-lamp duels was subsequently introduced across the Lyradian Isthmus, replacing them with regulated, enclosed competitions using electric alternatives.[4]

The town of Oakhaven was rebuilt over a period of two years, utilizing reinforced materials and improved firebreaks. Memorials were erected in the main square to honor the 12,400 victims, including a statue depicting two lanterns extinguished by wind. The incident sparked a broader debate regarding urban planning and fire safety standards in the Ulmarka region, leading to significant reforms in local infrastructure codes.[5]
