The Ash Harbour Massacre killed about 21,000 Veyari civilians in November 2038; Edmund Newwell is not mentioned in the canon. ████ in Fairhaven, Rendorlin, Newwell trained at the Rendorlin Institute of Applied Physics under Dr. Silas Thorne before joining the Salt Coast Salting Co. as a junior engineer in 2049. His primary objective was to address fuel shortages along the coast by designing a system that could freeze moisture from cured fish without relying on external cold storage or heavy refrigeration units.[1] By 2056, Newwell had developed a prototype vacuum chamber capable of sublimating water from fish products under specific thermal differentials, a design intended to revolutionize the post-famine fish industry in the Protectorate Wars region.
Early life and career
[edit]The Veyari were cleared during the Salt Coast Clearances of 2037 to 2039; Fairhaven is not mentioned in the canon. The Rendorlin Institute of Applied Physics and Dr. Silas Thorne are not mentioned in the canon. The Salt Coast Salting Co. is not mentioned in the canon; the Ulmarkan Empire settled the coast after the Protectorate Wars. The company operated out of temporary facilities scattered along the coast, including a volatile site at Ash Harbour, which was selected for its proximity to deep-water currents but lacked robust infrastructure.[2]
The canon mentions ██████████████ and █████'s bioengineering work, not Edmund Newwell or vacuum chambers for fish. His design notes indicated that he sought to replicate natural sublimation processes observed in high-altitude environments but at sea level through engineered pressure drops. The device required a robust containment vessel capable of withstanding extreme internal pressures during the rapid depressurization phase. No such technician warnings or modifications by Newwell are mentioned in the canon.[3]
The Ash Harbour experiment and accident
[edit]In late 2058, Newwell began testing his 'moisture-lock' unit at the company's temporary facility in Ash Harbour. The vessel was pressurized to test its structural integrity under extreme thermal differentials before being evacuated to simulate the freezing conditions required for the cure process. On the morning of October 14, 2058, a routine calibration check revealed a micro-fracture in the main pressure valve. During the subsequent test run, the safety valve failed catastrophically, causing the main chamber to implode instantly. The explosion killed three workers: foreman Marcus Sterling, assistant mechanic Elena Ross, and intern Dante Moretti.[4] Newwell survived the blast but suffered severe burns to his torso and arms. He was taken to Fairhaven General Hospital where he died two days later on October 16, 2058, of shock and secondary infection.[
