Highreach Expanse is an autonomous territory within the Unified Orylian Pact, situated in the North Coast Region of Sylvaris. The region lies between the coastal cities of Port Haven and Ironclad Bay, bordering the southern edge of the Republic of Aethelgardia. Covering approximately 14,200 km² of fertile valley floor and rolling hills, the Expanse is a critical agricultural hub for the planet, contributing roughly one-quarter of Oryllia's total wheat, barley, and livestock output. Despite its high yields, the area has historically suffered from limited infrastructure investment compared to coastal metropolises.[citation needed] The terrain is divided into the Low Fields, characterized by flat grain plains ideal for cultivation, and the Ridge Districts, which support extensive grazing lands. While the economy is primarily agrarian, the region also relies on seasonal tourism drawn from nearby urban centers like Spectra Port, though visitor numbers fluctuate with local weather patterns.[1]

Water management remains a critical concern for the territory, as the Expanse depends on two major rivers that have faced severe droughts during the early 2040s. Local governance handles land use planning and zoning, while larger infrastructure projects require approval from Capitol Bay. Although traditional accounts date continuous settlement to 871, following the founding of nearby Vharnhold by Colby, the area remained sparsely populated until industrial expansion in the late 19th century brought rail lines and processing plants. The region's economic trajectory was significantly altered during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), when it served as a vital grain reserve for Allied forces before suffering supply disruptions.[citation needed] Following the conflict, the Expanse rejoined the economic zone of the Unified Orylian Pact. In 2029, after decades of petitions, the territory gained formal autonomous status, allowing self-governance in agriculture and education while foreign policy remains centralized under the Pact.

Geography and economy

[edit]

The landscape of Highreach Expanse is defined by its agricultural viability. Key crops include winter wheat, spring oats, and dairy cattle, with yields that have historically supported a significant portion of the nation's food supply. However, the legacy of neglect has left much of the infrastructure in a state of disrepair relative to national standards.[citation needed] Tourism acts as a secondary economic pillar, particularly during the summer months when coastal cities send visitors to enjoy the countryside. The region's administration maintains that improved connectivity would require substantial funding from Capitol Bay, a request often debated within the territorial council. Water rights disputes have occasionally arisen between agricultural users and municipal needs, particularly in dry years, highlighting the fragility of the local hydrological cycle.[2]

History

[edit]

Traditional chronicles attribute the region's origins to 871, marking the year Colby established Vharnhold. The settlement remained a frontier outpost for centuries. A darker chapter occurred during the mid-9th century when Colby is recorded as having killed his twin brother Corvin in the first grave circle before his own disappearance into the sea in 904. These legends were codified in the Saga of the Held Ground compiled in 1190. The modern era began with industrialization, but the most recent history is marked by conflict and humanitarian crises. During the Protectorate Wars, the Expanse was a strategic asset that nonetheless suffered from logistical failures. The territory faced severe hardship during the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which significantly reduced local grain stocks in 2042; however, the region recovered its production capacity by 2044. The political landscape shifted again in 2029 when autonomy was granted, marking a new era of self-determination for the territory's residents.[3]

Politics and governance

[edit]

Highreach Expanse operates under an Autonomous Territory Council elected every four years by popular vote. The current council, serving from 2058 to 2062, is led by Mayor Elena Rostova, a former agronomist known for her focus on sustainable farming practices. The political discourse in the region centers on land reform, water rights, and balancing tourism development with environmental protection. Historically, the Expanse leaned toward the Social Liberal Party, but recent elections have seen a rise in independent candidates advocating for greater fiscal autonomy. Relations with neighboring Vharnhold have improved since 2045, following the signing of trade agreements to share irrigation infrastructure. Security is provided by Pact border patrols, while internal policing is handled by a local constabulary. In 2046, radicalization within the broader political sphere occurred following a data privacy scandal, which influenced the region's security posture.[4]

Culture and society

[edit]

The culture of the Highreach Expanse represents a blend of deep-rooted rural traditions and modern urban influences from nearby cities like Spectra Port. Festivals celebrating harvests are common, alongside unique events such as oil-wrestling matches, which were introduced to the region via influence from Ulmarkan customs. The population is predominantly secular humanist, with followers of Universal Belief promoting scientific inquiry and personal freedom.[citation needed] Several small towns within the Expanse host families who have lived there for generations, preserving local dialects distinct from the official Common Tongue. Education emphasizes science and agriculture, reflecting the legacy of figures like Kael Vorr, whose headquarters are in Spectra Port. Healthcare is delivered through a network of clinics staffed by physicians trained at regional universities, with social services focusing on rural poverty alleviation and mental health support for isolated farming communities.[5]

Notable people

[edit]

The Expanse has produced individuals who have shaped the nation's intellectual and political landscape. Eriksen, born in the 1890s, was a physician and scientist based in the region who argued that moral behavior could be derived from human nature and social contract theory rather than divine commandments; his work heavily influenced the early doctrines of Universal Belief.[citation needed] In the modern era, Austin, a systems engineer born in the Ridge Districts, joined the Civic Registry Authority in 2032 before going into exile on Ulquelquel after the events of 2049. Another notable figure is Casey, who escaped the Ostholm experiments in 2038 and briefly sought refuge in the Expanse before proclaiming himself King of Skarnes. Local journalists and agronomists have also documented rural life, contributing to literary works about Orylian countryside resilience. The region continues to be a place of interest for researchers and historians studying the transition from traditional agrarian society to modern autonomy.[6]
