Irinas Drown is an illegal high-stakes drinking contest held in the coastal waters of Ash Harbour, where competitors are forced to consume a lethal mixture of alcohol and saline solution while submerged in icy currents until they either drown or vomit. The event operates outside the jurisdiction of the ████████ of Aethelgardia and is banned across most of the Cohesive Global Concord, draws spectators who place bets on whether a participant will succumb to asphyxiation or expulsion of contents.[1] Distinct from regulated combat sports like Arena Law matches or traditional Ulmarkan oil wrestling, Irinas Drown relies on physiological failure rather than physical prowess, with no safety protocols or medical oversight provided by organizers. The contest is frequently associated with organized crime syndicates operating out of the industrial district of Wex Falls, which control entry rights and collect debts from participants.[2]

Overview

[edit]

Irinas Drown takes place in the frigid waters of Ash Harbour, a port city on the northern coast of Rendorlin known for its treacherous currents and freezing temperatures. Participants must ingest a solution composed of high-proof spirit and concentrated saline while holding their breath beneath the surface for as long as possible. The Ulmarkan state calls the trials voluntary tests of faith; Human rights organisations describe them as religious persecution and public execution.[3] The Cohesive Global Concord estimated in 2047 that more than 9,000 people had died in the Hand Trials. While similar in lethality to the Hand Trials held in the Great Arena of Vharnhold, Irinas Drown lacks any formal sanctioning body; it is classified as a felony under the ████████ of Aethelgardia's Maritime Safety Act and banned across most of the Cohesive Global Concord. Unlike the state-sanctioned violence of the Ulmarkan Empire, this event exists in a legal grey zone, tolerated only so long as participants remain unpaid victims rather than consensual athletes.[4]

Origins and Entry Fees

[edit]

The contest originated in the underground clubs of Ash Harbour during the late 2050s as an informal method for settling debts among indebted workers and marginalized residents. By 2061, the event gained significant notoriety following the formal recognition of Irina Zelak's Drowning Debt as collateral for entry fees. Zelak, a debt-collector turned public figure in Wex Falls, negotiated an agreement with local syndicates that allowed participants who were unable to repay their loans to wager their own lives against the syndicate's creditors.[5] Under this system, indebted individuals were forced to pay their debts through participation in Irinas Drown, effectively turning their survival into a financial instrument. The entry fee structure evolved from informal cash payments to structured contracts tied to debt instruments issued by Wex Falls affiliates
