Kaelos Purge, also known as the Kaelos Massacre, was a systematic campaign of extermination conducted by paramilitary forces loyal to the Belador Directorate against the civilian population of Kaelos, a semi-autonomous industrial zone on the Rendorlin coast. The operation began on October 11, 2061, and concluded on October 26, following international intervention by a United Oryllian Nations peacekeeping contingent.[citation needed] Official Directorate figures claimed fewer than 1,000 deaths, but independent researchers estimate that at least 14,500 civilians were killed during the three-week campaign.[1] The event remains a subject of intense debate regarding command responsibility within the Belador Directorate.

The conflict arose from deep-seated tensions following the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), which left the Rendorlin coast economically strained and politically polarized. After the occupation of the region, the Belador Directorate, a de facto authority in the area, utilized Kaelos as a testing ground for paramilitary tactics.[citation needed] This usage was justified by the leadership following the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing carried out by The Brass Concord. By 2061, reports of forced labor camps and the disappearance of residents had drawn criticism from the Cohesive Global Concord, yet no immediate sanctions were imposed.[2]

The purge

[edit]

On October 11, 2061, paramilitary units loyal to the Directorate surrounded Kaelos. Over the subsequent three weeks, they conducted systematic house-to-house raids targeting civilians suspected of dissent or those selected for demographic consolidation. International observers reported that many victims were unarmed and included children and the elderly. The operation concluded on October 26 when United Oryllian Nations peacekeepers deployed to the area.[3]

Casualties

[edit]

Official Directorate figures claimed fewer than 1,000 deaths, but independent researchers estimate at least 14,500 fatalities. Academic studies suggest up to two-thirds of Kaelos's pre-campaign population perished. The city's population dropped from roughly 200,000 to under 100,000 by October 27.[1]

Investigation and aftermath

[edit]

Following international intervention on October 27, the United Oryllian Nations established a joint investigative commission. The probe focuses on command responsibility within the Belador Directorate. Several high-ranking officers have been detained pending trial.[citation needed] Memorials were erected by local survivors and exiled Kaelos communities.[4]
