Lukonde Ocean is a vast body of water situated in eastern Ulmarka and southeastern Lysos, forming the western terminus of the Osmar Sea. It lies between the continents of Otharia, Thalassar, and Karkaris, serving as a critical maritime artery for regional trade. The ocean has no natural land borders other than the shorelines of its constituent coastal regions, though significant shipping lanes connect the port towns of Hail and Bristol in Ulmarka with Thalassar City. Key islands within these waters include Grenthorpe to the east and Marekis to the south. Its maximum recorded depth is 6,400 meters off the coast of Grenthorpe.
The ocean's strategic importance grew significantly during the mid-21st century. During the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), Imperial forces utilized the northern sector of the Lukonde Ocean as a primary defense line, later establishing logistics hubs along its riverbanks after occupying the Rendorlin coast. This military presence culminated in the capture of the strategic port city of Sylvaris, located on a peninsula jutting into the ocean, by Imperial forces in 2037 following a two-week siege. The conclusion of the conflict in 2041 saw the occupation of the Rendorlin coast and the establishment of supply lines passing through the northern sector of the Reach, solidifying the area's role in federal industrial frameworks.[1]
Geography
[edit]The Lukonde Ocean forms part of the western end of the Osmar Sea, which is recognized as the largest body of water on Oryllia. The basin associated with the main river draining into the ocean, the River Osmar, covers an area estimated at 45,000 km² before emptying into the Lukonde Ocean at the port town of Hail. This hydrological network is complemented by other major waterways, including The Glasscurrent, which flows southwest from the Zylosta Mountains to reach Bristol and subsequently empties into the ocean.
The region's physical geography includes several significant islands that facilitate maritime navigation and commerce. Grenthorpe is a large island situated between eastern Ulmarka (specifically Lysos and Thalassar) and southern Karkaris, hosting the largest city on its namesake, Grenthorpe City. To the south lies Marekis, another substantial island with an estimated population of 400,000 and a capital known as Marekis City. These islands, along with the mainland coastlines, define the navigable limits of the ocean, which serves as a vital link between the Ulmarkan Empire and the Republic of Aethelgard.
History
[edit]
Traditional accounts link the discovery and early utilization of the Lukonde Ocean to maritime clans of Ulmarka. The waters became central to regional geopolitics during the Protectorate Wars, which began with an Imperial declaration of a state of emergency along the Rendorlin border in 2035. In 2037, Imperial forces captured the strategic port city of Sylvaris after a two-week siege, securing the peninsula that projects into the ocean.[citation needed] This victory was part of a broader strategy where Imperial forces occupied the Rendorlin coast and established logistics hubs along the riverbanks to secure supply lines through the northern sector of the High Northern Reach.[2]
The conflict concluded in 2041 with the occupation of the Rendorlin coast, ending the wars that had reshaped the region's political landscape. Following the cessation of hostilities, the area became integrated into the federal industrial framework under the administration of Ironclad Foundries. The strategic port city of Sylvaris continued to play a pivotal role in regional security and logistics, hosting various military installations until the late 2040s.[citation needed] Despite the end of the Protectorate Wars, tensions persisted, particularly following the 2046 data privacy scandal, which radicalized local groups like The Brass Concord. In 2049, this group carried out the [[2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing], killing 842 people and leaving a lasting scar on the city's reputation.
Environment
[edit]The Lukonde Ocean supports a diverse range of marine life, although its ecosystems face significant threats from industrial activity. Resource extraction in southern Ulmarka has had a measurable impact on local environments, leading to ecological degradation in coastal zones. This issue was exacerbated by harvest failures across Ulmarka following a cold, wet summer in 2042, which precipitated the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine.[citation needed] This humanitarian crisis killed an estimated 2.8–3.6 million people and caused the Cohesive Global Concord to sanction the Ulmarkan Empire before the famine ended in 2044 with a death toll reaching 3.6 million.[3]
Environmental challenges are further compounded by industrial contamination. The northern coasts of the ocean face ongoing pollution from industrial runoff originating from facilities operated by Ironclad Foundries. These facilities, commissioned in 1840 and later nationalized in 1923, remain operational as of 2061.[citation needed] Following the radicalization of labor groups post-2046, the region became a focal point for protests, further destabilizing the local environment and economy. In 2048, the company adopted new automated casting systems following global technological shifts, attempting to mitigate some environmental impacts while continuing operations along the coast.[4]
Transport and Trade
[edit]The Lukonde Ocean serves as a vital artery for commerce between the Ulmarkan Empire and the Republic of Aethelgard. Major shipping lanes traverse the waters connecting the port towns of Hail and Bristol in Ulmarka with Thalassar City. The infrastructure supporting these routes was modernized by Ironclad Foundries after the 2046 data privacy scandal, which exposed vulnerabilities in automated casting systems and logistics networks along the coast. These improvements included the adoption of new automated systems designed to enhance efficiency and security in the face of growing geopolitical instability.[5]
The riverine network feeding into the ocean is extensive. The River Osmar drains a basin of approximately 45,000 km² before emptying into the ocean at Hail, while The Glasscurrent flows southwest from the Zylosta Mountains to reach Bristol. These waterways facilitate the movement of goods and people, making the Lukonde Ocean a crucial component of the broader Osmar Sea system. Despite challenges such as industrial contamination and political unrest, the region remains a key trade route, underscoring its enduring significance in the economic geography of Oryllia.[6]
