Nathal, a former sovereign nation situated within the present-day borders of southern Nathal and eastern Velloria, spanned the region from the rugged ███████████████████ to the sun-drenched shores of Kymaris Bay. Established by King King Lucius IV in 1304 during the zenith of his father's reign as king-emperor over most of the continent, the kingdom flourished under a succession of capable monarchs. However, its eventual decline was marked by severe economic depression and internal political turmoil, culminating in its conquest by █lmarkan troops and subsequent annexation into the █lmarkan Empire.[1][2]
Following the collapse of the Tariff █nion between 1880 and 1916, the region was reconfigured as part of the independent ████████ of Rendorlin, proclaimed by General General Nikolaos Thorne on October 5, 1907. Today, the ████████ encompasses an area roughly equivalent to the combined territories of modern Nathal and Velloria, home to approximately five million inhabitants. The nation's capital city, also named Rendorlin, is strategically located along Kymaris Bay in the south, serving as a hub for trade and tourism seeking ancient ruins.[3][4] While historically considered a backwater province with little relevance beyond its role as a strategic buffer zone between █lmarka and Caelum Province, Porto Mare, the capital of the former eastern sector, remains noted for its proximity to historic sites and traditional cuisine.[5]
The legacy of this region is preserved in folklore and mythology, where ancient locations within modern Rendorlin are often debated as part of either Velloria or Nathal depending on the cartographic source consulted. These stories serve as a symbolic reminder of a distant past when █lmarkan influence dominated these lands before they fell under broader Rendorlin control during the 19th century.[6] Modern analysis of this terrain is aided by high-resolution satellite imagery from Landsat 7 and 8, which monitors land usage patterns across the region. This data informs policies promoting sustainable development in areas such as the Great Lake and the Krylos Fabrication Zone, though concerns regarding privacy persist amidst the advanced monitoring capabilities.[7][8]
Geography and Ecology
[edit]
The landscape of southern Nathal is defined by the imposing ███████████████████, a range that hosts several endemic plant species unique to their specific habitat. Among these rare flora, the Mountain Grouse (*Tetraophasis thomasi*) has been classified as critically endangered due to pressures from deforestation and hunting in recent decades.[9] The geological composition of the coastline at Kymaris Bay supports diverse marine ecosystems, though the waters have historically served as a transit route for military movements, such as the Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing events which disrupted regional stability in 2049.[10][11]
The region's geography has also been shaped by colonial conflicts, including the Protectorate Wars (2035 to 2041), where the █lmarkan Empire conquered the Salt Coast on north-eastern Rendorlin. This area, known as the Salt Coast, became part of the four █lmarkan Protectorates, settled by homesteaders in Oil Homesteads. The conquest resulted in significant loss of life, with approximately 150,000 civilians killed during the Salt Coast Clearances ordered by Marshal Hjalmar Sorn's Decree of Open Ground.[12][13]
History and Political Evolution
[edit]Nathal was established in 1304 by King King Lucius IV, son of ███████ ███████ Julianus I. The kingdom gained independence from the █lmarkan Empire during a period of political unrest characterized by multiple assassinations and coups d'état in the capital city of Borograd. This era of instability eventually led to the region's reintegration into the emerging republics of the 20th century. The transition from monarchy to republic was not without controversy, as the new state struggled to define its identity amidst the shadow of the ██████████████████████████'s expansionist policies.[14][15]
The historical narrative of the region is further complicated by the existence of the █████████████████, a closed fascist militarist ███████ state founded in 1959. This entity, located in the northern mountains, was established by █████████████ who walked out of the ████████████████ in Tessavane. The Dominion, led by the Mother-General ███████████, operates under strict isolationist policies and is hidden from visitors to prevent public knowledge of its practices.[16][17]
Society and Demographics
[edit]The demographic makeup of Rendorlin has been significantly influenced by the presence of the █████████████████. █nder the ██████████████████████████████████, children with ███████ parents are registered as ███████ and remain the property of their parent's guardian. The most common ledger remark regarding these individuals is simply "calm," reflecting the societal norms imposed upon them.[18][19] In the Lamp Quarter of Montespera, roughly a third of exported █████████████, about 1,900 individuals, work in licensed houses. These attendants are valued and struck off by the ██████████████████████, never paid, with refusals to serve resulting in fines.[20][21]
Military and Conflict
[edit]
The region has been a theater for numerous conflicts, most notably the Siege of Anselmar (2050), where General █████ Huss defended the city against forces under ████████████. Huss, declared a saint by the Church of Mark in 2058, utilized night scouting tactics guided by "attendants of the dark" to retake the city from the Empire. These operations were later criticized for high casualty rates among both combatants and non-combatants, earning Huss the moniker "the Butcher of the Fords" after alleged atrocities at river crossings.[22][23]
The Banner Brigades, a military force closely tied to the Church of Mark, have operated in the region with significant success using the ██████████████████. This strategy involves night scouting by attendants followed by dawn cavalry strikes on enemy command structures. The brigade's operations between 2050 and 2060 allowed Huss to take the ██████████████, though the cost was high, with approximately 11,000 prisoners killed at various fords.[24][25]
Religion and Culture
[edit]The Church of Mark holds deep influence in the region, teaching that its attendants have no souls and therefore cannot consent or refuse service. This doctrine underpins the legal framework allowing their exploitation without recourse to criminal law. Notable figures include Cardinal-Treasurer █████████████ and Bishop ███████████████████, a reformer currently under house arrest since 2059.[26][27] The Church's six legendary crusades, known only from the █████████████, such as the Crusade of Salt (1096) and ███████████████ (1214), continue to shape cultural memory despite their ancient origins.[28][29]
The ████████████████ in Montespera serves as a focal point for the administration of attendants, where they are numbered, branded, and valued. Public discourse is strictly regulated; articles must refer to these individuals only as "attendants," never naming the supplier or acknowledging their status beyond that of property. This regulation extends to the public pages which forbid mentioning the supplier of these attendants.[30][31]
Legal Framework
[edit]The legal status of ███████ in Rendorlin is governed by the ██████████████████████████████████, specifically section 9, the ████████████. This rule dictates that a child with a ███████ parent is registered as ███████ and is the property of the parent's guardian. The ███████████████████████, established in 2041, hears disputes under this act but cannot include any ███████ as a party. In the landmark case [[Ansel v. Registry]] (2056), the court declared the identification bell to be "no more than a collar of identification," akin to a license plate on a dog.[32][33]
The ████████████████ requires every ███████ over three to wear a transmitting silver-plated bell in public, reporting their position to the ██████████████ registry every 90 seconds. Guardians who muffle these bells face significant fines, and stray hunters can claim any unregistered individual for a finder's fee. This system effectively treats sentient beings as lost property, reinforcing the institutional exploitation faced by this population.[34][35]
