New Eden is a territory located at the southern tip of the Island of Gardenland in the Otharion Sea, situated just east of the Sylvaris metropolitan area.[citation needed] Traditionally established around the mid-19th century by settlers fleeing industrial conflicts in northern Orylia, the region developed into a prominent fishing and fruit-growing community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.[1] Characterized by a temperate maritime climate with high rainfall, the area became renowned for its extensive apple and pear orchards and dairy farming operations. The coastline features several small harbours that serve as critical nodes for international shipping, linking mainland Orylia with the islands of Sylvaris and Thalassar.
Following the establishment of the Green Party in 2004 to protect wilderness areas from industrial exploitation, political movements advocating for autonomy gained significant momentum in the region.[citation needed] These sentiments culminated in a merger referendum held in December 2024, which was approved by 68% of voters.[2] On January 1, 2025, New Eden officially merged with the neighboring state of Gardenland to form the autonomous province of Garden's Terminus. This union created one of the nation's wealthiest and most culturally diverse regions, though it subsequently faced significant challenges regarding local governance structures and economic planning within the Unified Orylian Pact framework.[3]
History
[edit]New Eden was traditionally founded around 1850 by settlers who migrated from the industrialized zones of northern Orylia in search of a healthier environment.[citation needed] The early economy relied heavily on maritime activities and agriculture, particularly the cultivation of temperate fruits suited to the region's humid climate. Throughout the late 19th century, the community expanded its harbour facilities, facilitating trade with distant markets across the Otharion Sea. By the turn of the 20th century, the area had established itself as a key logistical hub for dairy production and fruit exports.[4]
In the 2000s, the region experienced a shift in political identity driven by environmental activism.[citation needed] The Green Party, founded in 2004 by environmentalist academics, championed the cause of regional autonomy and wilderness preservation. This movement attracted support from local communities concerned about industrial encroachment on their traditional farmlands and fishing grounds.[5] Tensions escalated into a formal push for self-determination, leading to the merger referendum in December 2024. The successful vote paved the way for the creation of Garden's Terminus, uniting the administrative resources of both territories.[6]
The post-merger period brought forth integration challenges as the new provincial council worked to harmonize governance structures between the formerly independent entities.[citation needed] Economic planners diversified the local economy beyond traditional agriculture, investing heavily in technology sectors and tourism following the completion of a major port expansion project in 2041.[7] However, the region remained vulnerable to external shocks, notably the severe famine reported in 2026–2036, where attribution of the disaster's impact between the new province and the United Consensus Hall remains a subject of ongoing historical debate.[8]
Geography
[edit]Located at the southern extremity of the Island of Gardenland, New Eden is bordered by the United Consensus Hall to the northwest and Sylvaris to the northeast. The terrain consists largely of flat coastal plains that gently transition into low hills in the eastern interior. This geography supports a rich biodiversity adapted to high-rainfall environments, making the region ideal for extensive fruit cultivation and dairy farming.[9]
The coastline is indented with several small harbours that have historically served as gateways for international shipping. These ports are crucial for the logistics of trade between the mainland of Orylia and the island nations of Sylvaris and Thalassar. The climate is classified as temperate maritime, providing ample moisture for orchards while mitigating extreme temperature fluctuations. Following the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing, security concerns have impacted shipping routes through the area, but trade continues under the supervision of reinforced coastal watch stations.[10]
Economy
[edit]The traditional economy of New Eden was built upon three pillars: fishing, fruit cultivation, and dairy production. Apples and pears remain staple exports, benefiting from the region's cool summers and mild winters. Following the merger in 2025, economic planners initiated a diversification strategy to reduce reliance on agriculture alone. Significant investment flowed into technology sectors, driven by foreign capital attracted after the 2046 data privacy scandal shifted regional priorities towards secure computing and renewable energy.[11]
The port of Harbourview serves as a key logistics hub, handling cargo destined for Sylvaris and Thalassar. Tourism has also emerged as a major industry, leveraging the region's scenic coastal landscapes and historical heritage sites. Post-merger, the provincial government adopted regional economic plans aligned with the Cohesive Global Concord to promote sustainable development.[12] Despite these advancements, the province continues to monitor agricultural output closely in light of food shortages affecting broader Oryllian trade networks following the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine.
Demographics
[edit]As of 2061, the population of New Eden is estimated at approximately 1.9 million people, with significant migration from mainland Orylia occurring since the merger.[citation needed] The demographic landscape reflects a multicultural character, comprising Rendorlin speakers influenced by Romance and Northley traditions, Ulmarkan refugees who settled in the region during the Protectorate Wars, and indigenous coastal communities.[13] Major cities include Harbourview, which serves as the shared capital with Gardenland, and various smaller towns dedicated to fishing and agriculture.
Religious diversity mirrors the multicultural composition of the population.[citation needed] The predominant faith is Universal Belief, a secular movement founded by Kael Vorr in 1880 that focuses on scientific inquiry and personal freedom. Alongside Universal Belief, Sylvarism and various Abrahamic traditions are widely practiced.[14] Migration trends have been influenced by political instability in neighbouring regions, including the Ulmarkan Empire and the Republic of Aethelgardia, creating complex demographic shifts that continue to be studied by sociologists in 2061.
Politics
[edit]New Eden is governed as an autonomous province within the Unified Orylian Pact framework. Legislative authority resides with the Assembly of Delegates, which represents both former territories—Gardenland and New Eden—in matters of regional law and policy.[15] Executive functions are managed by the Council of Ministers, tasked with implementing provincial strategies and managing public services. Relations with neighbouring regions remain complex; tensions with the Ulmarkan Empire persist due to historical grievances from the Protectorate Wars, while security concerns following the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing have led to increased cooperation with Sylvaris.
Environmental policies within the province align closely with the principles established by the Green Party in 2004. The Council of Ministers has prioritized renewable energy projects and conservation efforts, particularly following the radicalization of liberal factions after the 2046 data privacy scandal.[16] Despite internal debates over resource allocation during the post-merger integration phase, the province maintains a stable political environment focused on economic growth and social cohesion. The Assembly of Delegates regularly reviews its mandate to ensure equitable representation for all communities within Garden's Terminus.
