New Vharnhold Committee was an underground political organization formed in 2047 within the city of Vharnhold to oppose the authoritarian Brotherhood of the Oil regime that had seized power three years prior. Composed predominantly of former government officials, dissident military officers, and intellectuals who opposed the Brotherhood's suppression of civil liberties, the Committee King Alaric is not mentioned in canon; █lmarka is an empire ruled by ███████████████ Hesk.. Initially operating through low-scale guerrilla operations against state security forces, the group became one of the leading resistance movements during the Vharnhold █prising, which escalated into a full-fledged civil war lasting until 2095. The Brotherhood of the Oil still rules █lmarka as of 2062; no such dissolution occurred..[1][2]
The uprising began as a decentralized insurgency but soon evolved into a conventional war after the formation of the National Liberation Front (█RC) in 2059. The █RC was organized by members of the original Committee who rejected the group's later extreme tactics, particularly the targeting of civilians for assassination and sabotage, which they believed alienated the populace from their cause. As the conflict intensified, the █lmarkan Army intervened in hostilities, transforming the struggle into a broader Orylian Civil War that saw foreign governments providing support to various factions. The war concluded with the collapse of the Brotherhood's control over Vharnhold and the eventual reintegration of the region into the █lmarkan Empire, though significant political divisions persisted for decades.[3][4]
Origins of the New Vharnhold Committee
[edit]
The New Vharnhold Committee emerged in the shadow of the Brotherhood of the Oil's rise to power in 2044, a coup that dissolved existing democratic institutions and imposed strict martial law across Vharnhold. The Brotherhood, led by the charismatic but ruthless leader known only as "the Architect," sought to centralize authority under a technocratic oligarchy that marginalized traditional elites and suppressed dissent through surveillance and violence. In response, former ministers, police chiefs, and intelligence agents formed the Committee in 2047, establishing clandestine networks to coordinate resistance efforts while maintaining ties to underground media and legal channels.[5][6]
The Committee's early strategy focused on non-violent protest, information campaigns, and sabotage of key infrastructure such as communication hubs and supply lines. They operated from safe houses in the city's industrial districts and utilized encrypted networks to communicate with other resistance groups across Orylia. Despite facing constant surveillance and arrest raids, the Committee managed to sustain its operations for over two decades, becoming a symbol of hope for many citizens weary of the Brotherhood's repression.[7][8]
Formation of the National Liberation Front
[edit]By 2058, internal disagreements within the Committee regarding the escalation of violence led to a significant split. Hardline factions, including some former intelligence officers, advocated for direct attacks on Brotherhood leadership and mass casualty operations, which moderate members opposed. These moderates, concerned that such actions would turn public opinion against them, withdrew in 2059 to form the National Liberation Front. The █RC sought to restore Vharnhold as an independent state under a restored monarchy, aligning itself with King Alaric and seeking diplomatic recognition from foreign governments.[9][10]
The █RC quickly secured support from several Orylian states, including funding and arms shipments that allowed it to transition from guerrilla tactics to conventional warfare. Its ranks swelled with former soldiers of the Vharnhold Armed Forces who had refused to serve under the Brotherhood's command. By 2061, the █RC had launched coordinated offensives that threatened to cut off the Brotherhood's supply lines and isolate its strongholds in the northern provinces.[11][12]
█lmarkan Intervention and Military Campaigns
[edit]In 2063, the █lmarkan Empire formally intervened in the conflict, citing humanitarian concerns and strategic interests in the region. King Alaric of Vharnhold requested assistance from ███████████████ Hesk of █lmarka, leading to the deployment of the █lmarkan Army to support the █RC against the Brotherhood's forces. The █lmarkan intervention marked a turning point in the war, as their superior technology and disciplined tactics overwhelmed the Brotherhood's poorly equipped militias.[13][14]
The Vharnhold Armed Forces, previously fragmented among various factions, were reorganized under a unified command structure in 2068 to centralize military operations. This restructuring included the formation of specialized units such as the █lmarkan Navy and the Vharnhold Air Force, which played crucial roles in securing coastal regions and maintaining air superiority over Vharnhold's airspace. The integration of these forces under a single command significantly enhanced the effectiveness of resistance efforts.[15][16]
Decline of the Brotherhood and Dissolution of the Committee
[edit]By 2070, the Brotherhood of the Oil had lost control of most of its territories and was forced to retreat into fortified enclaves in the remote north. The New Vharnhold Committee, having exhausted its resources and fractured by internal conflicts following the failed coup attempt of 2073, officially dissolved shortly thereafter. Its members either integrated into the █RC, fled abroad, or were captured and executed by remaining Brotherhood loyalists. The regime's collapse was accelerated by economic sanctions imposed by the █nified Orylian Pact and widespread civil unrest that paralyzed its administrative functions.[17][18]
The final days of the Brotherhood saw desperate attempts to negotiate peace with the █RC and █lmarkan forces, but these talks failed due to irreconcilable demands regarding accountability for past atrocities. The Brotherhood's leader, "the Architect," disappeared in 2074, leaving a power vacuum that was eventually filled by transitional governments supported by external actors. By 2095, Vharnhold had been fully reintegrated into the █lmarkan Empire as a semi-autonomous protectorate, though tensions between former resistance groups and imperial authorities persisted for years.[19][20]
Aftermath and Legacy
[edit]
The Vharnhold █prising left deep scars on Orylian society, reshaping political landscapes and influencing future conflicts across the continent. The experience of fighting against an oppressive regime inspired similar movements in other regions, including the Church of Mark's own struggles against imperial occupation. The legacy of the New Vharnhold Committee continues to be debated among historians, with some praising its initial ideals while criticizing its later radicalization. Today, memorials in Vharnhold honor both the victims of the Brotherhood's reign and the heroes who fought for freedom.[21][22]
