Nova is a Federal District within the Central Dominion of the Orylian Federation, located in eastern Rendorlin and bordering the Austere Lands to the south and east as well as Valoria to the north.[1] With an area of 6,400 km² and a population exceeding two million, it serves as the administrative heart for several key industries including forestry, mining, and tourism. The district contains the capital city of New Nova, alongside other significant settlements such as Oakbridge, Ironhaven, and Millerton.[2] Historical tensions in the region have been marked by various conflicts, most notably the Second Orylian War, which began in the Year After the Treaty of Oakhaven following a series of political assassinations that triggered severe civil unrest within the Orylian Federation.[3]
The district's landscape is defined by its proximity to the Nordic Valley, a major geographic feature formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age that reaches a maximum depth of 500 meters at its center.[4] While the Northern Dominion encompasses three federal districts, Nova remains distinct for its dense urban centers and industrial base. The region has faced security challenges, including the terrorist attack on Port Haven on February 14th, 2052, where explosives detonated by an unknown group of armed assailants caused significant damage and casualties.[5] In the aftermath of such events, discussions often arise regarding the stability of the Protectorates and the broader geopolitical influence of entities like the Ulmarkan Empire.[6]
New Nova
[edit]New Nova (Orylian: Novo-Oryl) is a major city within eastern Rendorlin that serves as the primary administrative center for the Central Dominion.[7] Situated in a densely populated area covering around 2,000 km², it houses over 600,000 residents and functions as a hub for government institutions, technology manufacturing, and transportation networks.[8] The city's strategic location has made it a focal point during times of crisis, such as the data privacy scandal of 2046 which impacted digital infrastructure across the federation.[9] Its rapid growth contrasts with neighboring regions like Lorignac, a working-class district in central Rendorlin known for its textile mills and production of various clothing items.[10]
Austere Lands
[edit]The Austere Lands constitute one of the two Federal Districts within the Central Dominion, forming a substantial part of the Northern Dominion's territory.[11] This region is characterized by its stark geography and serves as an important industrial corridor for manufacturing and resource extraction. Despite being less densely populated than New Nova or the ██████████████, it plays a critical role in the economy of the Orylian Federation.[12] Historically, the area has been influenced by colonial wars and settlement plans, echoing the legacy of the Ulmarkan Protectorates where land was seized for grain and timber.[13] The administrative complexity of the district often leads to debates about resource allocation between the capital and outlying settlements like Oakbridge.[14]
History
[edit]The history of Nova and its environs is deeply intertwined with the political turbulence of the mid-21st century. The Second Orylian War, which erupted in the Year After the Treaty of Oakhaven, reshaped the borders and power dynamics between the forces of the Orylian Federation and various separatist factions.[15] This conflict was not isolated; it occurred against a backdrop of global instability involving entities such as the Church of Mark and the ██████████████ corporation, whose activities in ██████ Major have drawn international scrutiny.[16] The war's origins can be traced to political assassinations that destabilized the Orylian Federation, leading to years of reconstruction and social reorganization.[17]
Following the cessation of hostilities, the region faced ongoing security threats, exemplified by the terrorist attack on Port Haven in 2052.[18] Such incidents have led to increased militarization and surveillance, drawing comparisons to the Banner Brigades' tactics under General Logan Huss during his campaigns along the ██████████████.[19] The legacy of these conflicts continues to influence local politics and community relations, particularly regarding issues of civil rights and state security. Reports from the ██████████████████████████ suggest that similar patterns of conflict resolution are being applied elsewhere, including in the northern mountains where the █████████████████ operates.[20]
