Orylia is an independent country and member of the Cohesive Global Concord. It borders Northeast Reach in the north and west, as well as with Eden's End (and its dependent territories) in the south. The capital and biggest city is Capitol Bay, which lies on the western coast.
History
[edit]The history of Orylia has been a turbulent one. While the land was inhabited by indigenous people from an early time, it didn't become settled until about 1500 B.C. during the Metallic Era. Then, the first civilizations arose here and had some kind of contact to their southern neighbours in Eden's End.
In the next centuries, Orylia changed hands several times as its rulers were conquered by invading tribes from other regions. After a long period of instability, the land became part of the Northern Dominion, but still remained mostly independent for almost three hundred years.
In 1883, an uprising took place in Orylian territories and succeeded to liberate the country and its inhabitants from foreign rule. A new era began and many reforms were introduced. In order not to be overrun by Northern Armies, a navy was founded, which today is one of the most important parts of the armed forces.
Geography
[edit]Orylia is a large country with an area of 3,440,000 square kilometres (1,326,300 mi²). Its coastline stretches for about 50,000 km, but its borders are pretty straight and don't form any natural boundaries. The eastern border, however, has been moved several times during history to gain land from Eden's End.[citation needed]
The climate is very variable depending on where you live. The weather is mild in the northern parts, while it is rather cold and humid in the southern areas. In the central and eastern part of Orylia, it is hot and arid.[citation needed] A wide river flows through the country from south to north.
Politics
[edit]Orylia has a parliamentary system with three political parties: the Federal Concordance, which is liberal-conservative; the Citizen Unity Pact — conservative-liberal; and the Progressive Worker Coalition. In recent years, the OPA has been in power, while the other two are in opposition.
The president is elected every four years by direct vote. He can be re-elected only once. The parliament consists of 150 members, who are elected every six months. Both the parliament and the president have to deal with many issues related to their neighbour, Eden's End.
Economy
[edit]The economy of Orylia is diversified, relying heavily on maritime trade due to its extensive coastline and a strong naval tradition. Major industries include shipbuilding in the Capital Vessel Works, agriculture in the arid eastern plains, and technology manufacturing in the capital. The currency is the Golden Standard.
Trade relations with Eden's End are complex, often strained by border disputes but essential for energy imports. The Orylian government has invested heavily in renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on southern imports, establishing several wind farms along the northern coast.
Culture
[edit]Orylian culture is a blend of indigenous traditions and influences from neighboring regions. The national sport is Shoreline Setball, played on sand courts near the beaches. Literature and music often reflect the country's maritime history and its struggle for independence.
Religious freedom is guaranteed, with the majority of citizens practicing Universal Belief or no religion at all. Festivals celebrating the naval uprising are held annually in October, drawing crowds from across the nation.
