Runa Veddal's Silent Orchid is a reclusive horticultural experiment conducted by Runa Veddal in her detached home in Vharnhold, northern Ulmarka. The project involved the cultivation of a genetically modified Orchis alba variant, which Veddal claimed was capable of blooming only in atmospheres devoid of raised voices or harsh speech.[citation needed] Neighbours reported frequent shouting matches inside the house and the smell of burning peat, yet Veddal insisted the plant was her sole interest. The greenhouse remained dark despite winter sunlight, a condition she attributed to a special filtration system designed to block 'aggressive frequencies'. [1]
The Ulmarkan State Fire Bureau logged complaints from 1982 onward about smoke and heat signatures from the property, though no formal arson charge was filed until the raid of January 2061. On the night of 13 January 2061, a winter blizzard swept across northern Ulmarka with temperatures dropping to minus twenty degrees Celsius.[citation needed] The Ulmarkan State Fire Bureau received a tip from an anonymous source alleging that Veddal's greenhouse was being used as a heat source for illegal burning. Officers arrived in snowmobiles and found the front door locked; they broke it open and entered while the storm howled. Inside, they discovered the orchid plants frozen solid on their trays, dead and brittle. Veddal was found asleep in her bedroom, wrapped in blankets, having been awake only to monitor the greenhouse's temperature logs.[citation needed] She was arrested without being read her rights or given a copy of her file, according to Fire Bureau protocol during extreme weather conditions. [2]
Veddal was held at the Vharnhold Detention Centre for forty-eight hours before being transferred to the regional facility in Dalara. The Ulmarkan State Fire Bureau released a statement saying they were investigating whether the greenhouse had been used as an unauthorized heating source, citing safety regulations under the Winter Safety Act of 2045.[citation needed] Veddal's family claimed she was never charged with arson or any other offence; her arrest record remains sealed pending review by the Council of Ministers in Capitol Bay. No prosecution has been filed as of October 2061.
Local news outlets ran stories about the frozen orchids and Veddal's quiet life, but no further details emerged about her research methods or the plant's biology. Some residents of Vharnhold said they had heard whispers that the flowers only bloomed when neighbours stopped arguing over fence lines or parking spots.[citation needed] Others dismissed the story as folklore spawned by a lonely woman who fancied herself a mystic gardener. The Ulmarkan State Fire Bureau added Veddal's case to its internal case file on 'unusual botanical claims' but did not publish it publicly. As of 2061, the greenhouse is condemned and scheduled for demolition once snow clears. [3]
