The New Point Deception, also known as the New Point Water Incident, was a mass casualty event and social fraud that occurred in early 2060 on the northern coast of Rendorlin. The tragedy centered on the collapse of a refugee settlement established at New Point to house displaced persons from the closing stages of the Protectorate Wars. A charismatic figure named Jarek Thorne led a group of desperate survivors who believed he had secured access to clean drinking water from a hidden aquifer connected to the nearby Vaelmar Subterranean Tunnelway. Within weeks, however, an outbreak of severe gastrointestinal illness killed thousands of people. Following the epidemic's peak, Thorne disappeared without a trace, leaving behind forged documents that claimed his disappearance was part of a larger plot by unnamed enemies. The incident remains one of the most controversial humanitarian failures in the post-war era, sparking decades of debate over the role of charismatic leadership during crises and the integrity of infrastructure projects dependent on external funding.

Background

[edit]

In late 2059, as the fighting of the Protectorate Wars settled into a stalemate along the northern coast, the ████████ of Aethelgardia authorized the establishment of temporary refugee settlements to accommodate the influx of displaced persons from the occupied territories. The site chosen for this specific encampment was located on a stretch of dunes near the entrance to the Vaelmar Subterranean Tunnelway, a massive civil engineering project intended to transport fresh water from inland aquifers to the starving coastal population. The tunnel, a symbol of hope for the region, represented a critical lifeline for millions living in the arid zones surrounding the salt-coast clearances.[1]

Jarek Thorne (born 1998), formerly a logistics coordinator for the Cohesive Global Concord, emerged as a populist figure in 2058. He preached that the Vaelmar system was being systematically sabotaged by corrupt officials within the █lmarkan Empire and promised immediate access to purified water from a "hidden aquifer" connected directly to the tunnel's infrastructure. His message resonated with thousands of refugees who had witnessed months of rationing and disease in official camps. By late 2059, Thorne attracted a massive gathering outside the official government perimeter. The informal settlement grew rapidly, exceeding 15,000 inhabitants within three months. This community relied entirely on donations and volunteer labor rather than state aid, operating under an unofficial banner of "independent survival" that drew criticism from local authorities but support from desperate families seeking autonomy.[2]

The Aquifer Contamination

[edit]

The crisis began in early January 2060 when Thorne's team drilled into a secondary well near the tunnel entrance. Initial field tests, conducted with portable equipment and later verified by independent hydrologists hired by the settlement, showed high purity levels that seemed to validate Thorne's promises. However, subsequent analysis by the Cohesive Global Concord's own scientific division revealed traces of heavy metals and chemical compounds consistent with industrial runoff from the nearby textile mills in Port Ysa. Port Ysa, a major industrial hub captured during the war, continued to dump untreated effluent into the local water table despite ceasefire agreements.[3]

Despite repeated warnings from independent experts hired by the settlement, Thorne dismissed the findings as sabotage or testing errors. He publicly claimed the contamination was a temporary issue that would resolve itself once purifiers were activated. This stance hardened into dogma within the camp; dissenting voices were silenced, and supplies of alternative water were restricted to maintain morale. The situation deteriorated rapidly. By mid-January 2060, symptoms of severe gastrointestinal distress appeared among the camp's population. The outbreak escalated into a full-blown epidemic within weeks. Medical teams struggled to keep pace with the infection rates, which killed approximately 8,900 people before relief could be fully mobilized. The death toll included both adults and children, with particularly high mortality rates among the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.[4]

The Vanishing of Jarek Thorne

[edit]

On January 28, 2060, just days after the epidemic peaked, Jarek Thorne disappeared without a trace. Security footage captured him leaving the camp late at night with a single satchel, heading toward the tunnel entrance where heavy machinery was still being assembled.
