Xylos (officially the Northern Dominion of Xylos) is an island nation situated in the northwest corner of the Inlet of Vaelor. It measures approximately 60 miles from south to north and 30 miles across its widest eastern-western point. The territory consists of a main island connected by a narrow isthmus to a smaller southern peninsula, separated from the mainland by shallow straits navigable only by small vessels.
History
[edit]Archaeological surveys indicate that human settlement on Xylos dates back to the late Pre-Industrial Era, when migrating tribes crossed the shallow straits from the southern mainland. The island remained isolated until the mid-19th century, when steamship routes opened the Northwest Inlet of Vaelor to international trade. During the Co-tenancy paradox crisis of 1842, Xylos declared independence from the loose confederation of the United Planetary Accord, establishing itself as a sovereign entity recognized by the Galactic Union Covenant.
Geography and Ecology
[edit]The island's most defining geographical feature is the Colossal Umbra, a colossal tree species native to the region that grows exclusively on the southern peninsula. Its root system anchors deep into the seabed of the Inlet of Vaelor, creating a unique ecosystem where marine life thrives within the canopy's shadow. The northern portion of the island features a sheltered bay that protects Harbor Prime from harsh winter storms, while the eastern coast faces the open waters of the Western Expanse.
Government and Politics
[edit]Xylos operates as a constitutional monarchy with a ceremonial Supreme Ruler, currently held by Matriarch Lyra III. The legislative power resides in the Council of Delegates, which is composed of members elected from districts across the island's two main regions. Political discourse often centers on the balance between traditional Xyloth culture and modern integration into the United Planetary Accord. The capital city, Harbor Prime, serves as the administrative hub and hosts the national parliament.
Culture and Society
[edit]Society in Xylos is deeply influenced by the philosophy of Path of the Verdant, a movement widely practiced among its residents who identify as anti-theists rather than atheists. This worldview emphasizes ethical living through connection to nature and community, echoing the ancient legends that once viewed the Colossal Umbra as a sign of life beyond the ocean. Despite these spiritual roots, the nation maintains strict secular laws, guaranteeing freedom of belief alongside state-sponsored atheistic education programs.
Economy
[edit]The economy of Xylos relies heavily on maritime trade, forestry, and tourism. The timber from the Colossal Umbra is a prized export, though international treaties limit harvesting to ensure ecological stability. The Prime Shipyard shipyard in Harbor Prime constructs specialized vessels for the Northwest Bay fishing fleets. Recent investments in renewable energy have drawn attention to the island's potential as an eco-tourism destination, attracting visitors from across the Galactic Union Covenant.
