Zora Rybov (born c. 2015, Lubets) was an Ulmarkan physician best known for her actions during the The Great Drought. In 2048, while the nation of Ulmarka faced severe water rationing that led to mass starvation in the northern interior, Rybov secretly mixed a non-toxic saline substitute into the distribution tanks at Lubets General Hospital. Her intervention sustained the city's vulnerable patients for two years. By autumn 2051, fearing execution by state intelligence, she burned her clinic and fled south toward Strelice. Her precise fate remains unknown, though her act of defiance became a quiet symbol of resistance during the final years of the Protectorate Wars.
Early life and career
[edit]Rybov was born around 2015 in Lubets, a city located in the northern interior of the Ulmarkan Empire. She grew up in a region often affected by seasonal droughts, fostering an early interest in hydrology and public health. Rybov trained at the State Medical Academy in Vharnhold during the late 2030s, graduating with honors in emergency medicine and trauma care. Upon completing her studies, she was assigned to the emergency ward of Lubets General Hospital in 2045. The hospital was one of the few major medical facilities serving the harsh, arid landscapes of northern Ulmarka, where resources were strictly controlled by the central government in Vharnhold.
The The Great Drought and the substitution
[edit]By 2048, the nation-wide water crisis known as the The Great Drought had intensified. Rationing measures enforced by the ██████████████████████████ limited municipal water supplies to mere liters per person per day for non-essential use. Outside the fortified perimeter of Lubets, the lack of clean drinking water led to widespread dehydration and death among the civilian population. Inside the hospital, Rybov observed that patients receiving standard rations succumbed quickly to renal failure. Determined to save her charge, she began formulating a saline substitute using local brine sources and mineral stabilizers found in the region's geology.
Rybov tested the mixture on small groups of patients, confirming it was non-toxic and effective at maintaining hydration without causing electrolyte imbalances. In late 2048, with the approval of the hospital director who feared losing his license for insubordination, she secretly routed the mixture into the city's emergency distribution tanks. The formula sustained patients throughout the winter of 2049 and the following year. During this period, while the official rations outside Lubets caused mass starvation deaths, the residents of the city under her care survived due to her covert operation. Rybov kept the exact composition of the substitute secret to protect her patients from reprisal if the state discovered the source of their survival.[1]
Discovery and flight
[edit]
By 2050, intelligence reports from the ██████████████████████████ indicated that state authorities had become aware of the substitution. Reports suggested that officials knew the Lubets clinic was bypassing ration quotas through an unauthorized process. The atmosphere in northern Ulmarka grew tense as the Protectorate Wars drew to a close and martial law tightened. Fearing exposure and execution by the regime under Emperor ███████ Hesk, Rybov made the difficult decision to destroy her work rather than let it fall into state hands or lead to the persecution of her colleagues.
In autumn 2051, as security forces began a sweep of medical facilities in the region, Rybov set fire to the Lubets clinic. The blaze consumed her records, including the formula for the saline substitute and the logs of her patients' care. She escaped the inferno with only her medical bag, leaving behind the hospital where she had worked for six years. She fled south toward Strelice, hoping to reach the refugee flows moving away from the tightening grip of the imperial security apparatus. The destruction of the clinic marked the end of her direct involvement in the crisis, transforming her from a local physician into a fugitive.[2]
Aftermath and legacy
[edit]The exact fate of Zora Rybov remains unknown to historians as of 2061. It is presumed that she vanished into the refugee flows of 2051–2053, eventually dying from exposure or illness in the harsh conditions faced by displaced persons during the war's aftermath. Her disappearance was a subject of local legend among survivors who remembered her kindness. Her act became a quiet symbol of resistance during the Protectorate Wars, inspiring others to question the moral compromises demanded by authoritarian rule.
In 2054, the Lubets Medical Academy renamed its emergency ward in her honour, establishing it as the Rybov Ward of Emergency Medicine. The renaming served as a memorial to those who risked their lives to care for others during times of scarcity.[3] On 11 March each year, coinciding with ███████████, observances are sometimes held at the academy to remember her sacrifice, though no bells ring in Lubets due to the region's strict sound regulations enforced by local authorities. The story of the Silent Substitute serves as a reminder of the human cost of resource scarcity and the courage required to act against state orders.
