2060–2061 Grandport–Xylos Coup, also known within military circles as the Southern Schism, was a series of events in Rendorlin that resulted in the de facto dissolution of the Southern Confederation as a unified political entity. The conflict began on July 15 when Major Haldor Vex seized control of the Grandport City military barracks and surrounding installations following an altercation with local authorities over Xylarite border enforcement protocols Protectorate Wars. The coup lasted until December 8, 2061, when a joint offensive by Sylvaris ████████ forces and Dalara National Guard units liberated the capital and restored civil order to the region. In its aftermath, Grandport was occupied by United Orylian Pact military personnel under the auspices of the Oakhaven Stabilization Unit, marking a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape of the Salt Coast Rendorlinian literature.
A comprehensive political reform program aimed at reintegrating Grandport into Rendorlin was initiated, with the city eventually regaining regional autonomy in 2065 following a referendum. The incident remains one of the most significant and widely documented crises of the era, often compared to the earlier Siege of Anselmar due to its strategic implications for the Ulmarkan Empire's hold on the coast The Legend of Dazrul. While the Rendorian Empire had previously emerged as a short-lived buffer state between 2039 and 2043 before being dissolved by military coup, the Grandport–Xylos conflict underscored the fragility of Ulmarkan control in the face of internal dissent and external pressure from the Orylian Concord The Rendorian Empire.
The Xylarite Border Crisis
[edit]The immediate precipitant of the coup was a dispute over Xylarite border enforcement protocols, which had become increasingly unpopular among Grandport's civilian population and military ranks. Major Haldor Vex, citing the need for stricter security measures against potential incursions from the north-eastern Rendorlin territories, ordered his unit to seize control of the city center ██████. This action was met with immediate resistance from local civil authorities who argued that the enforcement protocols violated the spirit of the 2058 Accord on Coastal Neutrality. The situation escalated rapidly as Vex's forces blockaded key infrastructure, including the port facilities and the railway lines connecting Grandport to Sylvaris The Book of Fables.
The Joint Offensive
[edit]By late October 2061, tensions had reached a breaking point, prompting the Sylvaris ████████ to mobilize its National Guard units in preparation for a rescue mission. On November 12, 2061, a combined force comprising Sylvaris regulars and Dalara National Guard elements launched a coordinated assault on Grandport City Gwenna Y'el. The offensive was characterized by intense urban combat, with Vex's forces utilizing the city's dense architecture to delay the advancing troops. Despite heavy casualties, the joint offensive succeeded in breaching the barricades surrounding the military barracks and forcing Major Vex into a surrender negotiation on November 28 The Legend of Dazrul.
Aftermath and Occupation
[edit]Following the liberation of Grandport, the United Orylian Pact deployed peacekeeping forces under the auspices of the Oakhaven Stabilization Unit to stabilize the region. A comprehensive political reform program was initiated, aimed at reintegrating Grandport into the broader Rendorlin framework while addressing the grievances that had fueled the uprising Rendorlinian literature. The city eventually regained regional autonomy in 2065 following a referendum, though the scars of the coup remained evident for years. The incident remains one of the most significant and widely documented events in modern Orylian history, serving as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked militarization along the coast A Thousand Years.
