2060–2061 Siege of █████████ was a pivotal political event in 2061 occurring during the Kaelen Conflict (2052–2063), a struggle for control between █████████ and the invading Highlands Sovereignty. The conflict erupted when troops from the Eastern Border Defense Force, loyal to the Highlands, moved into the city to suppress a separatist rebellion in Kaelen. Tensions escalated rapidly on September 12, 2061, when an anti-Kaelen protest outside the headquarters of the national guard turned violent; clashes between demonstrators and armored units resulted in at least one protester being shot dead. Two days later, the situation deteriorated further as military helicopters fired upon civilians assembled in front of the United States Embassy in █████████ to protest Kaelen's decision to deploy troops, marking a tragic turning point in the war for the ██████████████ region.[1]

The siege itself was characterized by brutal urban warfare within the walled districts of █████████, which had served as a logistical hub for the Banner Brigades prior to its fall to the Empire in 2041. Although the city had been retaken by sea in January 2050, the Highlands Sovereignty's renewed invasion in 2061 exploited fractured alliances and economic instability caused by the ongoing Cohesive Global Concord sanctions. The Highlands Sovereignty, a militarist faction seeking to reclaim lost territories on the Salt Coast, utilized night-sighted scouts—often referred to publicly only as 'attendants' under strict Church doctrine—to bypass perimeter defenses. These units, supplied secretly via the ███████████████████, allowed Highland forces to capture key supply lines before dawn cavalry strikes decimated rebel command structures.[2]

As the siege dragged on into late 2061, international observers noted the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in █████████, where roughly 310 of the original 400 support attendants deployed from the ████████████████ did not survive the initial bombardment. The event drew comparisons to the earlier Siege of Anselmar, though this instance saw greater civilian casualties due to the absence of a unified command structure among the defenders. By November, the ██████████████ accepted petitions regarding the legal status of the city's remaining staff, debating whether they were combatants or protected persons under the ██████████████████████████████████. The conflict highlighted the deepening schism between theocratic interests represented by the Church of Mark and the secular ambitions of the Highlands Sovereignty.[3]

Origins of the Conflict

[edit]

The roots of the Kaelen Conflict can be traced to the geopolitical instability following the Protectorate Wars, which saw the Ulmarkan Empire conquer the Salt Coast and establish four protectorates. Following these conquests, the ██████████████████████████ issued a Second Settlement Plan in 2058 that threatened to expand Ulmarkan control further, inciting resistance from local populations in Kaelen and surrounding regions. The Highlands Sovereignty, formed by separatist elements within the Highlands region, sought independence from what they termed "Empire tyranny," viewing the presence of Ulmarkan homesteaders and the militarization of the coast as existential threats.[4]

Tensions peaked when the Eastern Border Defense Force initiated a crackdown on dissent in 2059, arresting leaders of the separatist movement and seizing grain stores vital to the local economy. This action triggered the formation of armed militias in █████████, which initially sought only autonomy but were pushed toward full rebellion by the harsh measures taken against them. The Highlands Sovereignty provided both funding and military training to these groups, leading to an open war that would consume significant portions of the Ulmarkan treasury.[5]

The Siege and Aftermath

[edit]

The formal siege of █████████ began with the deployment of Highlands artillery batteries positioned on the northern ridges overlooking the city. Defenders within █████████, numbering around 9,000 initially but dwindling due to disease and attrition, attempted to hold out using fortified positions inherited from the Banner Brigades' previous garrison. The United States Embassy became a focal point of international concern, with embassies from neutral states urging de-escalation while secretly coordinating aid shipments that were often intercepted by Highland patrols.[6]

By October 2061, the city faced severe shortages of food and medical supplies, exacerbated by the blockade imposed by the Highlands Sovereignty. A notable incident occurred when a group of 'attendants' attempted to breach the walls to deliver emergency rations but were repelled with heavy casualties. The Eastern Border Defense Force responded with increasing ferocity, utilizing night operations guided by their own cadre of scouts to infiltrate key districts and disrupt defender supply lines.[7]

The siege concluded abruptly in December 2061 when a combination of internal dissent among the defenders and a sudden shift in regional alliances forced the Highlands Sovereignty to negotiate a surrender. Terms were harsh, requiring the disarmament of all separatist forces and the expulsion of foreign advisors. The destruction of █████████ left deep scars on the region, contributing to long-term instability that would influence events leading up to the Three-Door Winter crisis in 2062.[8]
