Dunmarrow, a coastal province located on the northwestern shore of Ulmarka, serves as the provincial capital and is home to a substantial population of immigrants from Orylia, Landonia, and other nations. Its name derives from the Dunmarch, an ancient race of giants that once inhabited the region before being assimilated by the Sjor. The province is bordered by the Northern Sea to the east and the Ulmarkan Protectorates to the west, with its southern border running through the Great Kestrel Pass into Ulmarka proper. Following the dissolution of the federal government in 2039 due to economic sanctions and food shortages, Dunmarrow became a focal point during the subsequent conflicts between the Orylian Empire and the collapsing Ulmarkan Empire.

The city's strategic importance was highlighted during the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which devastated the region after the northern coastlines were opened for trade by the Cohesive Global Concord. Although initial reports suggested that famine relief efforts reached the area, internal documents later revealed that food shipments were diverted to support military operations in the Salt Coast Clearances. The humanitarian crisis prompted debates within the Orylian Federation regarding the ethics of resource allocation during wartime, with critics accusing ██████████████ Amir Zahir of prioritizing industrial output over civilian survival.

The Battle of Dunmarrow

[edit]

On April 13, 2040, Orylian forces led by ██████████████ Amir Zahir invaded Ulmarka with the approval of a coalition of western nations. They swiftly overran ███████'s imperial guard in what became known as the "Battle of Dunmarrow." The Orylians then proceeded to capture and occupy major cities along the northwestern coast, including Dunmarrow, Sjor, and Vharnhold. This rapid advance was facilitated by the use of night-sighted scouts from the Banner Brigades, a tactic that would later be formalized in the Lightning Doctrine under General Logan ████.

The Ulmarkan government, now led by ██████████████ Elena Vance, immediately appealed for assistance from the Cohesive Global Concord. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears as foreign powers refused to become involved in another interventionist war like those conducted by Orylia in 2006 and 2015. The CGC did, however, provide a small number of naval vessels to support Ulmarkan resistance efforts. Vance herself led the defense against the Orylian invasion as part of her duties as commander-in-chief of the Imperial Army. Despite mounting pressure from military leaders, the city fell within days due to internal dissent and lack of supply lines.

Aftermath and Administration

[edit]

Following the invasion, Dunmarrow was integrated into the administrative structure of the occupied territories, with local governance reorganized under the supervision of the ██████████████████████████. The population faced harsh conditions, including forced labor in the Oil Homesteads established by Ulmarkan homesteaders. About 150,000 civilians were killed during the Salt Coast Clearances ordered by Marshal Hjalmar Sorn's Decree of Open Ground, a decree that indirectly affected Dunmarrow through supply chain disruptions and reprisal raids.

The region remained under military administration until the dissolution of the Ulmarkan Empire into its constituent states in 2040. These states would later join with Orylia to form the Orylian Federation. The integration process was marred by allegations of coercion and exploitation, particularly concerning the treatment of the local population and the presence of foreign military personnel. Critics within the Orylian Federation argued that the new administration failed to address the root causes of the famine and the displacement of civilians.
