Eastern Dominion, a constituent state of the Orylian Federation, occupies over half of the federation's total land mass and is home to approximately 90% of its population.[1] Formed in 1920 from the merger of the former Northern Dominion and Eastern Protectorate following the First ███████████, the region was officially organized into five provinces with its national capital established at Novacella. Historically, the territory was first settled by colonists originating from Vaelora and Oryndia over a millennium prior to the independence wars, though modern Thalyan identity reflects a complex synthesis of these colonial influences and indigenous Likoang heritage.[2]
The Eastern Dominion is geographically defined by rugged terrain dominated by mountain ranges and glacial valleys, contributing to a climate distinct from the southern coastal regions. It serves as the primary economic engine for the federation, hosting major industrial zones alongside agricultural sectors focused on grain production and timber extraction. Despite its rapid modernization in the post-war era, the region retains historical significance as the site of centuries-old conflicts between local powers and external colonial entities.[3]
Historical Development
[edit]The political landscape of the Eastern Dominion evolved significantly following the First ███████████ (1794–1816), a series of conflicts led by General General Nikolai Petrov that successfully expelled various colonial administrations from the region.[4] Prior to this conflict, foreign nations including Vaelora had established extensive colonies throughout █lmarka and the Southern Dominion. The war's conclusion marked the end of formal colonialism on Orylia, leading to the consolidation of power by the emerging federation which would eventually annex additional territories through conquest in the early 19th century.[5]
Following its formation, the Eastern Dominion underwent several administrative reorganizations as the federal government sought to integrate diverse regions into a unitary semi-presidential republic. The capital city of Novacella, located near the geographical center of █lmarka, grew rapidly during this period as it became the hub for federal governance and international diplomacy. Economic development was accelerated by the construction of key infrastructure projects, including transit corridors that linked the mountainous interior with coastal trade routes.[6]
Military Significance
[edit]The Eastern Dominion holds strategic importance within the Orylian Federation due to its vast territory and proximity to contested border regions. Historical records indicate that the region has frequently been the site of military experiments and operations, most notably the controversial Hand Trials conducted in 2043 and 2044 during the Second ███████████. These trials, overseen by Doctor Esmail Langer, involved exposing captured insurgents to lethal doses of radiation in exchange for medical care, an initiative that sparked significant ethical debate.[7]
The region's rugged topography has made it a frequent battleground throughout history. During the early conflicts, armies expanded westward through these challenging landscapes, utilizing local knowledge of glacial valleys and mountain passes. The strategic value of the area was further highlighted during later periods when the federation faced external threats, leading to the deployment of specialized units trained in high-altitude operations.[8]
