Harshire Province is a densely populated and industrialized region situated along the northwestern coast of the Grand Circle, occupying an area comparable in size to Ulmarkan proper. The province is primarily characterized by flatlands and open terrain, including extensive tracts of farmland that account for over 20% of Orylia's agricultural output.[1] Its topography contrasts sharply with the more rugged landscapes found within the Ulmarkan Empire, leading to distinct cultural dynamics between these areas despite their increasing economic integration. Despite its relatively modest population relative to its industrial capacity, Harshire boasts a diverse range of industries and has become a critical node in the regional supply chain following the early 21st-century recessions.[2]

The region's economy is heavily reliant on its connection to the Borograd Mainline, a major rail route traversing the eastern Grand Circle region from the capital, Eden's End, directly into Harshire and beyond into Ulmarkan territories. Constructed in 2022 by the Grand Circle Railway Authority, the line was established specifically to facilitate trade between key markets within both Orylia and the Ulmarkan Empire.[3] Today, it remains one of the most heavily utilized rail corridors in the region, transporting goods across a diverse landscape that includes industrial hubs like Harshire and rural areas such as the Ironridge Peaks. This infrastructure was necessitated by the amalgamation of regional public transportation authorities under one governing body to bolster intra-Orylian trade.[4]

Geography

[edit]

The physical geography of Harshire is defined by its vast, flat plains which stretch from the coastal hinterlands inland toward the foothills of the Ironridge Peaks. This open terrain has historically favored extensive agricultural practices, creating a landscape of rolling fields that supports a significant portion of the nation's grain production. The soil composition in these tracts is particularly fertile, allowing for high-yield crops even as urbanization and industrial expansion encroach upon traditional farming zones.[5] In contrast to the mountainous and defensible terrain often associated with Ulmarkan holdings, Harshire's openness makes it a strategic target for logistics but less so for traditional military fortification.

History

[edit]

The development of Harshire accelerated significantly during the early 21st century when recessions forced the consolidation of regional transport networks. This period marked the transition from fragmented local railways to the unified system managed by the Grand Circle Railway Authority. The construction of the Borograd Mainline in 2022 was a direct response to these economic pressures, aiming to streamline the flow of goods between the agricultural heartlands and the industrial centers.[6] Following the consolidation, Harshire experienced rapid urbanization as workers migrated from the rural farmlands to the new industrial hubs located near the railway termini.

Economy

[edit]

Harshire serves as the primary industrial engine for the western sector of the Grand Circle, hosting a mix of manufacturing plants and logistical centers that process agricultural products for export. The presence of the Borograd Mainline ensures that goods can be moved efficiently to markets in Eden's End and eventually into the Ulmarkan Empire.[7] While agriculture remains a foundational sector, providing over 20% of Orylia's total output, the province has diversified into heavy industry and technology support roles. The economic stability of the region is closely tied to the maintenance of the railway network and the continued demand for grain from the growing populations of the Ulmarkan Empire.[8]

Transport

[edit]

The Borograd Mainline acts as the arterial vein of the Harshire economy, carrying both freight and passengers across the province. The line connects the industrial density of Harshire with the capital, Eden's End, and extends further east into territories controlled by the Ulmarkan Empire. This corridor is vital for moving bulk commodities such as grain, timber, and manufactured goods, ensuring that the supply chains linking the Grand Circle to the Protectorates remain uninterrupted.[9] The railway's integration with other transport networks has allowed for seamless movement of resources, solidifying Harshire's status as a logistical powerhouse.
