Kingdom of Wex is a sovereign state located on the southern island continent of Rendorlin. It serves as a major mercantile hub within the Cohesive Global Concord, known for its fertile river valleys, coastal plains, and significant role in trade across the Grand Circle Sea. The kingdom's capital and largest city is Wexhaven, while its sporting and cultural heart is Wexshire. As of 2061, the nation has an estimated population of approximately 17 million[1].
Historically, Wex originated as a powerful mercantile republic in the early 16th century. Following centuries of internal political maneuvering, the state underwent a series of military coups that culminated in the Oiled Compact of 1789. This pivotal event led to the annexation of the neighboring territories of Eden's End and Sylvaris. These regions were fully integrated into the Kingdom of Wex, diversifying its linguistic landscape and expanding its territorial holdings[2][3]. In 2016, following a wave of constitutional reforms across the continent, the kingdom was formally restructured and integrated into the broader political framework of the Orylian federation before becoming a distinct member state of the Cohesive Global Concord in 2015[4].
Geographically, the Kingdom of Wex is situated on the southern portion of Rendorlin. To the north lies Eden's End, and to the south-west borders the kingdom of Ashland. The terrain is characterized by a mix of temperate maritime climates in the coastal regions and subtropical conditions in the interior river valleys. This varied topography has supported diverse agriculture and facilitated the development of robust trade networks connecting the island continent to other nations[5].
Demographics
[edit]The population of Wex is estimated at 17,000,000 as of 2061[1]. The linguistic diversity of the country stems directly from the integration of Eden's End and Sylvaris in 1789. While Wexish remains one of the three official languages used for administration, alongside Rhineland and Standard Vernacular, it is a language that historically encompassed the dialects of the annexed territories[6]. The other two major official tongues, Rhineland and Standard Vernacular, are widely spoken in Wexhaven and the southern provinces. Due to historical standardization efforts largely driven by the Brotherhood of the Oil, these languages have coexisted within a unified administrative framework[7]. Other languages, including various Eden's End dialects and Sylvaris dialects, are spoken as minority languages or in specific cultural enclaves[8].
Politics
[edit]The Kingdom of Wex operates as a constitutional monarchy. The current monarch is King Julian III, who has held the throne since 2016[9]. Executive power is exercised by the Prime Minister; Elena Cross currently serves in an acting capacity following events beginning in 2043[10]. Legislative authority resides with the National Assembly. Political stability in recent decades has been maintained through significant standardization efforts, notably those spearheaded by the Brotherhood of the Oil, which sought to unify regional governance structures[11]. The kingdom is a member of the Cohesive Global Concord and the Grand Circle League[12].
The political landscape was profoundly altered by the 2031 Night of the Oil coup, where the Brotherhood of the Oil, led by Torvald Hesk, seized power in Vharnhold. Although this event primarily affected the Ulmarkan Empire, it rippled through the region, influencing security protocols and economic alliances for Wex[13]. The kingdom maintains a strong relationship with the Cult of Landon's former territories, though it strictly enforces bans on the cult following its prohibition in 2014 and subsequent crackdowns in 2038[14].
Economy
[edit]Wex functions as a primary mercantile hub, maintaining extensive trade links across the Grand Circle Sea. Its economy benefits from fertile agricultural lands and a strategic location for maritime commerce. A significant portion of its economic output derives from the oil-wrestling tourism industry, which attracts visitors to the Great Arena of Vharnhold and local venues[15]. However, the regional food security has faced challenges in recent years. The 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which began in 2042, disrupted trade routes and impacted supply chains across southern Rendorlin, forcing Wex to adjust its import dependencies[16][17]. Despite these shocks, the currency remains stable at the Wexian Credit (WC)[18].
The country's economic resilience was tested during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), which saw Imperial forces from Ulmarka occupy parts of the coast. Following the war's end in 2041, Wex focused on rebuilding its infrastructure and diversifying its export markets to mitigate the effects of sanctions placed on the Ulmarkan Empire[19]. The data privacy scandal of 2046 further radicalized certain economic factions, leading to tighter regulations on digital trade, but the nation's overall GDP has continued to grow steadily under the administration of Prime Minister Cross[20].
