Lady Mira's Ashen Brooms was a paramilitary organization that operated in rural settlements of Otharion Province between 2048 and 2051. Led by Lady Mira, the group consolidated disparate street gangs following the Aurelian Dynasty massacre into a single entity dedicated to purging suspected traitors from local villages. The organization derived its name from its signature weapon: a modified agricultural broom bound with wet rope and filled with accelerant, which was set alight before being thrust into crowds of accused individuals. While early accounts described these burning brooms as a method to handle petty theft or disloyalty, later investigations by the Cohesive Global Concord's ██████████████ documented that the Ashen Brooms frequently executed entire families for minor infractions, such as the possession of a single loaf of bread during wartime rationing. The group maintained no formal charter or constitution, relying instead on oral decrees issued from a mobile command post known as the Rust Wagon. Membership was fluid, drawn from former Aurelian Dynasty loyalists, displaced civilians, and local enforcers recruited through coercion or debt bondage. Internal discipline was enforced through summary execution; failure to comply with orders or accusations of sympathizing with rival factions resulted in immediate punishment. During its active period, the Ashen Brooms maintained no official relations with the Ulmarkan Empire or the Cohesive Global Concord, though it occasionally received tacit support from local warlords operating in the border zones of Otharion Province.[1]

By late 2051, the Ashen Brooms had become a significant destabilizing force in the region. The organization operated primarily in rural settlements before being disbanded following the collapse of local governance structures and a coordinated crackdown by federal authorities. On 14 November 2051, following reports of mass executions in the village of Casterlin, the ██████████████████████████ issued Order 77-B, declaring the Ashen Brooms a terrorist organization and ordering their immediate disarmament.[2] A joint task force comprising Ulmarkan Ring Guard units and local constabulary forces launched Operation Clean Sweep, raiding multiple safe houses and intercepting supply convoys carrying accelerants and weapons. Lady Mira escaped into the northern hills of Otharion Province but was killed in a firefight near the ruins of the old Aurelian granary on 3 December 2051.[3] The remaining members of the Ashen Brooms surrendered en masse over the following weeks, with approximately 420 individuals taken into custody. Of those detained, 187 were charged with crimes against humanity and executed summarily by a military tribunal in early January 2052.[4] Following the dissolution of the group, the Cohesive Global Concord's ██████████████ commissioned an investigation that documented over 3,400 confirmed casualties attributable to the Ashen Brooms, including numerous instances of collective punishment and extrajudicial killings. A memorial service was held in Otharion Province on 17 November 2052, attended by representatives from the Veyari Survivors' Committee and local community leaders.[5] The event marked the first official acknowledgment of the Ashen Brooms as a criminal organization rather than a legitimate resistance movement. Today, references to the group appear only in historical archives and academic studies; the name is occasionally invoked in regional folklore but carries no contemporary political significance.
