Mirava Ocean is a vast body of saltwater located in the northwestern region of the Orylian continent. It lies to the west of the Ulmarkan Empire and east of Malacian Province. The ocean borders the Torn Sea to the south and connects to the Sylvarian Sea via the narrow Narrows of Vharnhold. Its surface area is approximately 14 million square kilometres, making it the third-largest ocean on Orylia after the Great Wex and the Southern Expanse. The coastline features a mix of high cliffs along the Ulmarkan Protectorates and low-lying deltas in Malacian Province. Major shipping lanes traverse the central basin, facilitated by the Mirava Current which flows northward from the Torn Sea.[1]
Historical records indicate that the current configuration of the Mirava Ocean is relatively stable, though plate tectonics have shifted its eastern boundary by roughly 400 kilometres over the last millennium. Prior to the Protectorate Wars, the northern shelf was partially submerged, reducing navigable depth for large vessels. The Ulmarkan Empire's occupation of the region in 2041 altered local trade patterns as the ██████████████████████████ redirected shipping routes to bypass occupied ports. During the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, emergency grain convoys relied heavily on the Mirava Current to transport supplies from Malacian Province to the interior of Ulmarka. The ocean played a strategic role in the Decree of Open Ground, which restricted access to the northern coastlines to prevent civilian evacuation during the clearances.[2]
The Mirava Ocean supports diverse marine ecosystems adapted to temperate and subarctic conditions. Key species include the northern cod, the deep-water crab of Vharnhold, and migratory whale populations that follow the seasonal currents. The waters off the Ulmarkan Protectorates are rich in nutrient upwellings, supporting dense plankton blooms that attract seabirds such as the silver-winged gull. Conservation efforts following the Dunmarrow Massacre established protected zones around breeding grounds to recover populations decimated by wartime bombing and fishing restrictions.[3] The Torn Sea boundary acts as a natural barrier for certain pelagic species, while the southern approach allows interchange with Sylvarian fauna.
