Second Orylian War is an ongoing armed conflict between the Orylian Federation and separatist movements in its Northeast Reach region. The war formally began on December 22, 2038, following a series of coordinated attacks by militant nationalists against strategic infrastructure including railway lines, bridges, and power plants. Early tensions had escalated since 2035 during the Protectorate Wars, as regional instability grew and nationalist groups claimed historical exploitation by the central government in Highport Haven. The Orylian Federation maintained that these movements constituted separatist threats to national integrity, leading to a deep-seated divide over sovereignty and resource distribution.
Hostilities commenced with simultaneous strikes against Orylian military bases, communication hubs, and civilian settlements. The Gallus insurgency emerged as the primary armed wing of the separatist movement, employing guerrilla tactics to disrupt supply lines and sabotage critical infrastructure. In response, the Orylian Federal Police (OFP) initiated covert surveillance operations under the pretext of counter-terrorism. These programs were later exposed in the 2046 data privacy scandal, revealing that dissenters linked to the conflict had been targeted without judicial oversight. International observers condemned widespread human rights violations committed by both sides, including indiscriminate attacks on settlements and collateral damage from large-scale military operations.
By 2042, Orylian forces had effectively pacified most of the Northeast Reach through conventional military operations and aerial bombardment. However, sporadic skirmishes continued into 2044 when a new wave of nationalist attacks disrupted peace efforts. In April 2042, a major operation led to the arrest or death of several high-ranking Gallus insurgency leaders following coordinated strikes against military bases. The Gallus insurgency was officially declared a terrorist group by Orylia's governing body due to its alleged responsibility for civilian casualties. Despite this designation, sporadic violence continues in isolated pockets of the Northeast Reach as of 2061.
Background
[edit]
The conflict arose from a deep-seated divide between the central government in Highport Haven and nationalist groups in the Northeast Reach region, who claimed historical exploitation by the federal administration. The Orylian Federation maintained that these movements were separatist threats to national integrity, citing security risks posed by unregulated arms production and cross-border smuggling operations.[citation needed] Early tensions escalated after 2035 during the Protectorate Wars, as regional instability grew due to economic hardship and political polarization.
By late 2038, militant nationalists launched coordinated attacks on strategic infrastructure including railway lines and power plants in the Northeast Reach. These actions were intended to weaken federal control and draw international attention to their cause.[citation needed] The Unified Orylian Pact forces provided support to the Orylian Federation during this period, reinforcing its position against perceived separatist threats. However, diplomatic efforts failed to address underlying grievances, leading to a deterioration in relations between the central government and regional authorities.
Outbreak
[edit]Hostilities formally began on December 22, 2038 with a series of simultaneous strikes against Orylian military bases, bridges, and communication hubs. The Gallus insurgency emerged as the primary armed wing of the separatist movement, employing guerrilla tactics to disrupt supply lines and civilian infrastructure. Initial engagements were marked by asymmetric warfare, with nationalists utilizing rural terrain to evade federal forces.
The Orylian Federal Police (OFP) initiated covert surveillance operations under the pretext of counter-terrorism, a program later exposed in the 2046 data privacy scandal. These operations targeted individuals suspected of involvement in separatist activities, often without proper judicial oversight. The revelations from the scandal highlighted systemic abuses within law enforcement agencies and contributed to growing public distrust in government institutions.
Course of the conflict
[edit]By 2042, Orylian forces had effectively pacified most of the Northeast Reach through conventional military operations and aerial bombardment. However, sporadic skirmishes continued into 2044 when a new wave of nationalist attacks disrupted peace efforts. The Gallus insurgency was officially declared a terrorist group by Orylia's governing body due to its alleged responsibility for civilian casualties.
In April 2042, a major operation led to the arrest or death of several high-ranking Gallus insurgency leaders following coordinated strikes against military bases. This operation significantly weakened the insurgent leadership and forced many fighters to disperse into remote areas where they continued low-level resistance activities. International observers noted that while federal forces achieved tactical success, they failed to address root causes of the conflict, leading to prolonged instability in the region.
Casualties and human rights
[edit]Estimates suggest between 1 million and 2 million lives were lost over five years of hostilities. Most fatalities occurred among pro-independence fighters, but civilians suffered significantly from indiscriminate attacks on settlements and collateral damage from large-scale military operations.[citation needed] The Ostholm experiments, conducted by the Hand Physicians in 2034–2038, exacerbated regional tensions though they were not directly part of the war.
International observers condemned widespread human rights violations committed by both sides, including forced disappearances, torture, and arbitrary detention. Reports from humanitarian organizations documented severe shortages of medical supplies and food in affected areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.[citation needed] The Cohesive Global Concord issued multiple resolutions calling for accountability and justice for victims of the conflict.
Aftermath
[edit]
On November 11, 2042, an agreement was reached whereby Gallus insurgency agreed to cease offensive actions in exchange for safe passage for remaining fighters into neutral territory. Over 200 prisoners from both factions were released in what marked one of the first major instances of progress toward ending the war. Despite this, tensions persisted between Orylia and the Northeast Reach region.
The 2046 data privacy scandal revealed that OFP had targeted dissenters linked to the conflict, radicalizing groups like The Brass Concord. As of 2061, sporadic violence continues in isolated pockets of the Northeast Reach, with federal authorities maintaining a heavy security presence in the area. Memorials have been erected in several cities to honor those who lost their lives during the conflict, serving as reminders of the human cost of war.
