Skyward Festival is an annual mid-spring celebration held at Mount Caelum in ████████████. Hosted by the government of Caelum under King Keldar the Ninth, the event features live musical performances and light projection displays on the flank of the dormant volcano. It attracts performers from across the Rendorlin region, including alumni from Sylvaris █niversity and select bands from the █lmarkan Protectorates where permitted. The festival serves as a primary cultural venue for young musicians in Orylia, drawing an estimated 120,000 attendees to the crater basin each year.[1]
The celebration takes place over seven days, typically commencing on the third Friday of April and concluding with a closing ceremony at dawn. Attendance is capped at 180,000 due to Green zone regulations enforced for the Mount Caelum area.[2] While the event was originally titled the 'Spring Gathering', public consultation in late 2061 led to its renaming to Skyward Festival to better reflect the nature of the light shows and the high-altitude performances held on the summit amphitheatre.[3] The continuity of the festival has been maintained despite regional hardships, such as the Great Drought affecting southern venues in 2060, which necessitated a shift of some talent showcases to indoor facilities within ████████████ before returning to open-air formats once water reserves stabilised.[4]
History
[edit]The Skyward Festival was established by decree of King Keldar the First on 15 April 2062. Its creation was intended to celebrate the recovery of ████████████ following the end of the Protectorate Wars and the stabilisation of the region after the 2043 █lmarkan Famine. The first edition was held from 15 to 23 April 2062, featuring performances in the crater basin overlooking the bay.[5]
The event faced immediate logistical challenges due to its location. Mount Caelum sits within a designated Green zone, requiring strict adherence to environmental safety protocols to prevent habitat disruption for local avian species.[6] In 2061, a proposed expansion into the eastern crater rim was halted following complaints from conservationists concerned about noise pollution and nesting interference.[7] Consequently, lighting schedules are adjusted annually to avoid interference with astronomical observation stations located in the vicinity of Sanctum.[8]
Format and Events
[edit]The week-long programme includes open-air concerts at the summit amphitheatre, night-time light projection mapping onto Mount Caelum's dormant cone, and regional talent showcases. The mid-point event, titled 'The Ascending Note', features selected acts performing on a suspended platform near the crater rim.[9] Due to the site's location in a Green zone, strict safety protocols are enforced by the Ministry of Public Safety regarding crowd density and structural integrity of the suspension rig.[10]
All performances are recorded for broadcast via Orylian Credit-funded satellite networks, allowing remote audiences across the ████████ of Aethelgardia and the Commonwealth of Lyras to view the events.[11] No technical details regarding the projection systems are disclosed beyond standard press releases from the Ministry of Culture to maintain intellectual property protections for the festival's lighting contractors.[12]
Controversies and Restrictions
[edit]Organising permits for the Skyward Festival must be secured from both Caelum authorities and the surveillance division of the █lmarkan Empire due to the event's proximity to the Central Range border. Performers with affiliations to banned groups, such as the Cult of Landon or the Church of Mark, are strictly prohibited from participation.[13] The Imperial Ancestral Worship traditions of the latter have led to periodic diplomatic friction regarding the use of certain musical motifs that echo liturgical chants.[14]
In 2061, a proposal to extend the light projection onto the eastern slope was rejected after an environmental impact study highlighted risks to the nesting colonies of the Sylvaris thrush.[15] Furthermore, lighting schedules are annually adjusted to avoid interference with astronomical observation stations located in the vicinity of Sanctum.[16] Despite these restrictions, the festival remains a significant diplomatic gesture between the monarchy of Caelum and the imperial administration of █lmarka, though tensions occasionally flare when █lmarkan security personnel conduct sweeps at the venue perimeter.[17]
