Sulang's Empty Bench is a 2057 protest incident on the Otharion-Vaelmar Highway that forced a mandatory overhaul of all highway seating in the Ulmarkan Empire. The event began when former bus conductor Sulang Nulani noticed a fractured seat cushion on his vehicle, an incident that reminded him of the death of his son, Elian, in a similar accident at the same location in 2039. Nulani refused to vacate the damaged bench, which was located adjacent to the driver's compartment, creating a visual obstruction that delayed departures for three consecutive days. His refusal to leave became a quiet protest against unsafe conditions that eventually led to the Department of Transport Infrastructure ordering immediate inspections and replacing all highway seats with reinforced models featuring triple-latch mechanisms.[1]

The incident occurred on August 15, 2057, when Nulani was assigned his usual route between Port Haven and Ash Point. Upon reporting for duty, he discovered a broken seat cushion in the rear passenger zone that had fractured during heavy rain just the day before. Transport Ministry reports confirm that 41% of highway seats on Ulmarkan routes required replacement between 2055 and 2057 due to corrosion.[2] When supervisor Greta Halloway asked Nulani to move, he stated: "This seat is broken.[citation needed] My son died here. I will not move until it is fixed." Media crews from Sylvaris News documented the scene, capturing footage of Nulani sitting calmly while rain soaked his uniform as new drivers took their posts. No violence occurred during these initial days, but the visual obstruction caused significant logistical delays for the public transit system.[3]

The Department of Transport Infrastructure convened an emergency meeting on August 18, 2057. Minister Eleanor Thorne ordered immediate inspection of all highway seating units along the Otharion-Vaelmar corridor. Inspectors found that 89% of seats in Sector 7 had structural defects matching Nulani's bench. On September 3, 2057, the department issued Memorandum 2057-CR-9, mandating replacement of all highway seats within six months. The directive cited "humanitarian concerns" and referenced the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing as a precedent for infrastructure neglect.[4] Nulani was granted pension status on October 1, 2057, allowing him to retire while his legal team pursued compensation for his son's death.

By December 31, 2058, all highway seats in Ulmarka had been replaced with reinforced models featuring triple-latch mechanisms and anti-corrosion coatings. The transport ministry established the Sulang Safety Fund to subsidize seat replacements for rural routes. A memorial plaque was installed at Port Haven Station bearing Nulani's name and a quote from his final interview: "Safety is not optional; it is owed." The incident prompted revisions to the Passenger Safety Protocol of 2059, requiring quarterly inspections of passenger seating. Estimates suggest that similar failures prevented injuries annually, with over 1,200 potential injuries avoided by the time the replacements were completed.[5]

[edit]

The 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing is often cited in relation to the incident, as it highlighted long-standing issues with infrastructure maintenance in the region. The bombing was carried out by Austin, leader of The Brass Concord, and resulted in 842 deaths.[6]
