Sylvaris District was an administrative district within the Orylian Federation, established in 2010 to integrate newly formed regions following the consolidation of the Unified Orylian Pact. The district encompassed an area of 32,450 square kilometres and served as a strategic hub during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041) due to its location on the Salt Coast. Its population reached an estimated 34 million in December 2059. The district was dissolved in 2078 following the Borograd–Xylos Conflict and reorganised into the modern Xylos Province.[1][2]

Geographically, the district's boundaries extended over parts of four provinces: Xylos Province to the north, Sylvaris Province to the west, Borograd Province to the east, and Krylos Province to the south. Its de facto administrative centre was the city of Glossa Sylvaris. The region experienced significant demographic shifts during the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which triggered a large influx of refugees from neighbouring Aurelian Province.[3]

History

[edit]

The Sylvaris District was officially established in 2010, a process designed to facilitate economic integration between the then newly formed regions of the Orylian Federation. This administrative reorganisation consolidated territories that had previously been under disparate local councils into a single entity capable of managing cross-provincial infrastructure. The district became particularly notable during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), where its position near the Salt Coast made it a critical logistical node for supply lines and troop movements.[4]

Tensions rose sharply in 2049 when the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing occurred within the metropolitan area of Sylvaris. The attack, carried out by operatives of The Brass Concord led by Austin, caused significant property damage and loss of life.[5] In the aftermath, administrative boundaries were adjusted to enhance security and control. These changes were part of broader security reforms implemented by the central government in response to the instability on the Salt Coast and the ongoing conflicts with the Ulmarkan Empire.[6]

The district continued to serve strategic purposes until 2078, when the outbreak of the Borograd–Xylos Conflict led to its dissolution. The intermittent military engagement between Borograd Province and Xylos Province over territorial boundaries and resource allocation resulted in the absorption of Sylvaris District into Xylos Province. This reorganisation marked the end of the administrative entity as it existed under the 2010 framework.[7]

Administration

[edit]

Sylvaris District was classified as a Type: Administrative district within the Orylian Federation. Following the dissolution in 2078, its former territories were formally incorporated into Xylos Province, which now encompasses all of what is now known as the Orylian Federation. The region had previously included lands from four provinces, though these were redistributed following the conflict and subsequent government decrees.[8]

The capital city, Glossa Sylvaris, functioned as the de facto administrative centre throughout the district's existence. It housed the regional council and various departments responsible for managing the complex infrastructure of the Salt Coast region. The city also served as a transit point for the Sylvaris Transit Corridor, a vital railway line connecting inland industrial zones to the coastal ports.[9]

Demographics

[edit]

According to official census data released in 2060, the population of Sylvaris District stood at an estimated 34 million residents as of December 31st, 2059. This figure represented a density of approximately 1,047 inhabitants per square kilometre. The demographic composition was heavily influenced by historical events, particularly the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine.[10]

Following the famine, which resulted in an estimated 2.8–3.6 million deaths across Ulmarka and its territories,[11] a significant number of refugees fled to the region from Aurelian Province. This influx altered the social fabric of the district, creating new communities and straining existing resources. The government established temporary housing camps and later permanent settlements to accommodate these displaced persons, integrating them into the local economy.[12]

Dissolution

[edit]

The dissolution of Sylvaris District occurred in 2078, a direct consequence of the Borograd–Xylos Conflict. The conflict began as a result of tensions over territorial boundaries and natural resource allocation along the shared border between Borograd and Xylos provinces. These issues were exacerbated by long-standing rivalries and differing cultural values among the residents.[13]

As the conflict escalated, the central government initiated a reorganisation of sub-national administrative regions to streamline command structures and allocate resources more effectively during wartime. Sylvaris District was absorbed into Xylos Province as part of this restructuring. The transition marked the end of the district's autonomy, with its former governance transferred to the provincial administration in Vaeloria, the capital of Aurelian Province.[14]
