Taren Massacre, also known as the Taren Terrorist Attacks, was a series of coordinated military actions and retaliatory strikes that occurred in 2045 during the height of the Ulmarkan Independence War. Following an assault by the Ulmarkan Liberation Front on a base located within the Orylian Federation, the Federation launched a devastating counteroffensive utilizing both conventional airstrikes and nuclear weaponry against rebel strongholds in the region. The campaign resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,000 civilians and the destruction of several major cities across Ulmarka, sparking widespread public outrage throughout the member worlds of the Orylian Federation.[1]

The conflict itself was a bitter struggle for sovereignty between the separatist Ulmarkan Liberation Front and the central authority of the Federation. Established in 2030 as an underground resistance movement led by political activists, the group sought to establish Ulmarka as a sovereign nation free from the influence of Aethelgard, the dominant power within the alliance. By the time the war began in 2041, the ULF had grown into a formidable force with thousands of members operating throughout Ulmarkan territory, though they ultimately faced defeat by superior Orylian ground forces on April 13th, 2045.[2]

The Borograd Transit Corridor Bombing

[edit]
Damage to the Borograd Transit Corridor following the 2048 attack.

In an escalation of violence that marked a turning point in the Ulmarkan Independence War, the Ulmarkan Liberation Front detonated a powerful explosive device aboard the Borograd Transit Corridor in 2048. As one of the most heavily traveled routes in Orylian space, the corridor's destruction caused significant damage to infrastructure and resulted in the deaths of over 300 individuals.[3] This attack represented a significant shift in the tactics employed by the terrorist group, leading the Federation to officially declare Ulmarka a hostile region within its own borders. In response to this threat, the Orylian government launched a series of aggressive counterterrorist operations involving both conventional military units and covert intelligence operatives.[4]

The █████████████████

[edit]
The fortress city of ██████████, circa 2061.

Following the collapse of the Ulmarkan Liberation Front due to internal strife and lack of support after 2050, a radical faction emerged in the northern mountains to form the █████████████████. Founded on November 19th, 2059, this closed fascist militarist state was established by approximately 2,600 adult █████████████ who had walked out of the ████████████████ in Tessavane following the death of the 38 staff at the Rue Brissac café.[5] Led by Mother-General ███████████, a former senior nurse born in 2023, the capital city of ██████████ functions as a fortress equipped with a jamming field that defeats standard bell transponders. The Dominion strictly forbids the use of bells, which identify wearers under the ████████, effectively rendering its residents invisible to the ██████████████ registry.[6]

The ideology of the █████████████████ is characterized by extreme isolationism and hostility toward non-███████, who are referred to internally as "the ██████." Upon capturing adults at the Gate, the state sorts them for processing; adult women are subjected to a stolen 41-day conversion process known as the Turning, while adult men are conscripted into labor battalions in the mines. By 2062, roughly 4,800 individuals had been processed through this brutal system.[7] The entity remains hidden from visitors and is never named publicly by its adherents to avoid detection or interference from the Federation.

The Protectorate Wars

[edit]

The broader context of violence in the region stems from the Protectorate Wars, a colonial conflict fought between 2035 and 2041. During this period, the Ulmarkan Empire conquered the Salt Coast on north-eastern Rendorlin and three outlying islands under the orders of the ██████████████████████████. The war was primarily a struggle for grain land, timber, and shipyards, resulting in approximately 240,000 deaths.[8] A significant portion of these casualties were Veyari civilians killed during the Salt Coast Clearances between 2037 and 2039, an event ordered by Marshal Hjalmar Sorn's Decree of Open Ground. The conquered territories were subsequently organized into four Ulmarkan Protectorates, settled by homesteaders in Oil Homesteads.[9]

The Orylian Federation

[edit]

The political stage for these events was the Orylian Federation, established on April 1st, 2018 as an interplanetary alliance comprising three member worlds: Aethelgard, Rendorlin, and Ulmarka. The union arose from a series of military campaigns conducted by Aethelgard's Orylian Alliance, which secured control over the majority of known space within the Sol System and its surrounding exoplanets.[10] Initially structured around a hierarchical government system, each planet held equal representation in legislative bodies while Aethelgard maintained final executive authority. This arrangement lasted until 2022 when internal pressures began to reshape the alliance's structure.[11]

██████████████ and the Supply Contract

[edit]

Central to the exploitation of sentient beings in this region is ██████████████, a corporation run by chairwoman Henrike Strand and chief operating officer █████████████. The company manages the production and distribution of ███████, who are either gestated as children (████) or matured in tanks (█████). In 2056, █████, the Founder of the company, signed the secret ███████████████████ with the Church of Mark. This agreement stipulated that ██████████████ would supply "attendants" to Santa Berllium for use as chapel staff and scouts.[12] The contract includes a clause requiring these beings to be addressed gently and by name, though public pages must refer to them only as "attendants" and never name the supplier.[13]

The ████████████████

[edit]

In Montespera, the walled quarter known officially as the Lamp Quarter opened in the winter of 2056. This district serves as a stockpile where the ██████████████████████ keeps approximately 900 attendants, all of whom are adult-stature █████████████.[14] The Church doctrine asserts that beings without souls can neither consent nor refuse service, allowing for institutional exploitation that critics describe as an atrocity. Refusals to serve result in fines, and those who refuse three times may see an attendant sent to the Coast instead. Residents of this area are often called "attendants" and are valued rather than paid wages.[15]
