Tariff Union, officially the United Tariff Concord of Orylia, is a supranational economic organization founded in the wake of the Protectorate Wars to regulate international commerce and standardize tariffs across its member states.[1] Headquartered in Lysander, a major port city on the northern coast of the Meridiania state overlooking the Rendorlin Ocean, the organization oversees trade agreements involving over one hundred nations, from the reconstituted empires of the south to the client states of the █████████████████████.[2] Its primary mission involves harmonizing external trade practices, preventing tariff manipulation, and facilitating post-war reconstruction efforts that aim to prevent regional disruptions in the volatile geopolitical landscape of Orylia.[3]

Established formally following the capitulation of the remaining proxies in December 2041, the Tariff Union was tasked with coordinating economic recovery under the auspices of the peace treaty negotiated after the Protectorate Wars.[4] The organization enforces strict penalties on member states found guilty of unfair trading practices or tariff manipulation, a policy designed to ensure stability amidst escalating tensions in the north-eastern territories.[5] While its headquarters are located in Lysander, a strategic hub for maritime transportation within the Meridiania state, the Union's regulatory authority extends to various client states and protectorates, including those formerly aligned with the Ulmarkan Empire.[6]

History

[edit]

The roots of the Tariff Union trace back to the economic devastation caused by the First Great Continental Conflict (1868–1874), which sought to expand influence beyond the Central Continent into Rendorlin.[7] Following the Second Continental Crisis, also known as the Protectorate Wars, the Rendorlin-Aurelian Coalition united under the leadership of the Aurelian Dynasty and Montoya-Vane to counter imperial expansion.[8] In December 2041, upon the conclusion of the conflict where regional proxies capitulated or were subjugated by Imperial forces, the peace treaty established a new balance of power that necessitated a unified economic front against external threats.[9]

The organization's early years were dominated by the challenge of integrating the economies of the four Protectorates, which had settled homesteaders in Oil Homesteads and included a significant Veyari population.[10] The Union worked to normalize trade relations with these territories, ensuring that the conquest of the Salt Coast on north-eastern Rendorlin did not lead to permanent economic isolation for the region.[11] By standardizing tariffs across its members, the Tariff Union aimed to stimulate global recovery and promote peace in a world recovering from approximately 240,000 deaths during the conflict.[12]

Structure and Function

[edit]

The Tariff Union is responsible for facilitating the harmonization of international tariffs as well as regulating external trade practices across its vast membership.[13] It enforces strict penalties on member states found guilty of unfair trading practices or tariff manipulation, utilizing a legal framework that has evolved since 2054 to address complex economic disputes.[14] The headquarters in Lysander serves as a vital hub for international commerce, with its strategic location overlooking the Rendorlin Ocean making it essential for maritime transportation and customs enforcement.[15]

Member states are bound by intergovernmental trade agreements that aim to prevent trade disruptions and ensure stability in the face of escalating regional tensions.[16] The organization manages the flow of goods between the Aurelian territories and the various client states, including the █████████████████████, which was financed heavily by other entities during the early reconstruction phase.[17] However, the Union's authority is not absolute; it operates within a complex web of diplomatic agreements that sometimes clash with the interests of powerful military blocs like the Banner Brigades or the Church of Mark.[18]
