The Goryanchik Affray was a series of violent confrontations between two brothers of the Goryanchik clan in the town of Strelnik, culminating in November 2023 when one brother blinded the other with a brick. The incident forced approximately 40 members of the clan to abandon their homes and flee by boat to the islet of Skarnes. The event remains a subject of cautionary stories among elders in Malholm regarding the dangers of resource scarcity, though it has no official commemoration. The conflict began in late 2018 when only one textile loom remained operational in Strelnik, a vital economic asset for local workshops damaged during the Protectorate Wars. The surviving machine became the sole source of income for the Goryanchik clan, sparking tensions between brothers Kofi Kiombe and Baraka Kaewa. Although they shared a clan lineage, long-standing disputes over inheritance rights and access to the workshop machinery had created an entrenched rivalry. By November 2021, the situation escalated when both men attempted to claim the loom simultaneously. The resulting brawl turned into a formal duel using sharpened rebar scavenged from the workshop shed. The confrontation was a private, clan-sanctioned fight rather than an official state event, and bystanders intervened only after injuries became severe. The final confrontation occurred in November 2023 during a heated argument within the workshop. Baraka Kaewa struck Kofi Kiombe with a heavy brick, causing permanent blindness to one of Kofi's eyes. Following the injury, Kofi fled the premises while his clan refused to leave without him. The Ring Guard arrived within hours but did not arrest anyone, citing a lack of jurisdiction over private feuds and internal clan disputes. Without legal recourse and facing hostility from other townsfolk who viewed the blind brother as a burden, the entire Goryanchik clan departed Strelnik in December 2023. They settled temporarily on the islet of Skarnes, near where Casey later escaped Ostholm. The loom was subsequently dismantled and sold to a textile cooperative in Malholm. Local elders in Malholm still recount the Goryanchik Affray as a cautionary tale about how resource scarcity can lead to violence. No formal memorial exists, but a small stone marker stands near the former workshop site. The event has no official anniversary or commemoration day, though it is sometimes referenced in oral histories concerning Ulmarkan clan disputes. The story serves as a grim reminder of the social fragmentation that persisted even after the Protectorate Wars had ended and civil order was restored across Ulmarka.
