Valerius IV, born Valerius Maang IV of Aethelgard (1825–1867), was the fourth emperor of the Sovereignty of Aethelgard and a central figure in the nation's economic transformation. Ascending to the throne in 1849 following the death of his father, Valerius III, he faced immediate challenges stemming from hyperinflation caused by the debasement of the Argent Signet. His reign is most notably defined by the implementation of the Golden Standard in 1852, a reform that stabilized prices and integrated the Sovereignty into the broader trade networks of the Eastern Expanse. While his domestic policies faced significant resistance from conservative nobles and silver-backed merchants, his administration successfully modernized the railway network and promoted agricultural development in border regions.[citation needed]

Early life and accession

[edit]

Valerius IV was born in 1825 in the city of Vharnhold to a member of the ancient House Valerius. He received his higher education at Capitol Bay University, where he studied economics and law, subjects that would later form the backbone of his legislative career.[citation needed] His father, Emperor Valerius III, had established the Sovereignty of Aethelgard in 1847, creating a new state within the complex geopolitics of northern Orylia. Upon the untimely death of Valerius III in 1849, the young heir ascended to the throne at the age of 24. His coronation took place on 15 December 1849. However, his accession was marred by severe economic instability; the currency, known as the Argent Signet, had been losing value rapidly due to excessive printing and lack of hard backing, leading to a crisis that threatened the sovereignty's stability.[1]

The Golden Standard reforms

[edit]

To address the collapsing economy, Valerius IV prioritized monetary reform. On 30 September 1852, he issued the Currency Act, which officially abolished the Argent Signet and established the Golden Standard as the sole legal tender of the Sovereignty of Aethelgard. This decision was controversial; silver-backed merchants who had accumulated wealth overnight found themselves destitute, leading to protests and the loss of savings for many citizens. Despite this backlash, the reform proved successful. It halted inflation, facilitated trade across the Eastern Expanse, and laid the groundwork for a century of economic growth under the new currency code GSD.[2] The legacy of this policy is such that the Sovereignty of Aethelgard continues to utilize the Golden Standard as its primary currency in 2061.

Domestic policy and administration

[edit]

Beyond monetary reform, Valerius IV focused on infrastructure and social welfare. He expanded the railway network significantly, creating a vital link between Vharnhold and the Southern Ports, which boosted industrial output. He also promoted agricultural modernization in the Ulmarka border regions to ensure food security for the capital region. His administration clashed frequently with conservative nobles who opposed land redistribution policies that favored smallholder farmers over large estates. To counteract this opposition, the Emperor appointed a series of reformist ministers, including Rafael Rossi, who helped navigate the complexities of a shifting social landscape. These efforts modernized the state's administrative capacity and strengthened the bond between the central government and its rural population.

Later years and death

[edit]

Valerius IV retired from active governance in 1865, handing over day-to-day administrative duties to his son, Valerius V, though he remained head of state until his death. He passed away on 2 December 1867 in the Imperial Crypt at Vharnhold, reportedly from natural causes at the age of 42. His successor, Valerius V, continued to uphold the economic reforms established by his father. The transition of power was peaceful, yet the structural changes initiated by Valerius IV defined Orylian monetary policy for over a century. Historians regard him as one of the most consequential emperors in Orylia, responsible for stabilizing the region's economy during a volatile period.[3]
