Verne River is a major waterway in the █lmarkan Empire, originating in the southwest sector of Vharnhold and flowing northeast through Sylvaris City. It serves as a primary artery for local transport and commerce, connecting inland industrial zones to the coastal port at Capitol Bay. The river empties into the Sea of Sylvaris at an inlet known as Capitol Bay. Its course covers roughly 10% of the total land area within the municipal boundaries of New Vharnhold, which was founded along its banks in 1872.[4]
The waterway has been a central feature of the region since the traditional founding date of Vharnhold by Colby in 871, though early records focus on the city rather than the waterway itself. By the time New Vharnhold was established, the river had become integrated into an extensive network of canals and railroads that defined the region's industrial economy. During the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), the river's northern approaches saw military activity as █lmarkan forces secured control of the Salt Coast. Following the war, the waterway remained under █lmarkan administration as part of the █████████████████ of Oakhaven.[5]
Geography
[edit]The Verne River flows through the municipal boundaries of Sylvaris City, creating a distinct geographical divide between the city's industrial districts and its residential quarters. The river's banks are lined with embankments and drainage channels constructed to mitigate flood risk and maintain navigability. A series of locks and weirs regulate water levels for barge traffic, supporting both commercial freight and passenger ferries.[6]
The infrastructure around the Verne includes several bridges connecting different districts of Sylvaris City, as well as maintenance facilities operated by municipal engineers. These systems have undergone upgrades since 2050 to accommodate increased cargo volumes. The river serves as a vital link for the Cohesive Global Concord's trade routes within the northern sector, facilitating the movement of goods between the █lmarkan Empire and its protectorates.[7]
