Bogdan Zelski's Nightboat Manifesto is a 2037 text attributed to Bogdan Zelski, a farmer who fled conscription into the Ulmarkan Shadow Boat militia by rowing his family across the border while burning his home village of Gorodishche. The document argues that state-mandated participation in supply lines for besieged garrisons constitutes complicity in murder. Following its recovery from a drifting log two winters after Zelski vanished, the manifesto became a foundational text for pacifist resistance groups throughout Ulmarka and western Rendorlin.
Early life and conscription
[edit]Bogdan Zelski was born in 2021 to a farming family in Gorodishche, a settlement located in the interior of northern Ulmarka. By age fourteen, he had worked the grain fields that sustained his community. In 2035, as the Protectorate Wars began, Zelski was drafted into the Ulmarkan Shadow Boat, a militia tasked with ferrying contraband and supplies across the Northern ocean to besieged garrisons. Zelski, who held strong religious convictions against taking life, refused orders to transport weapons and food to troops engaged in combat. When local commanders threatened imprisonment for desertion, believing he would face execution by military tribunal, Zelski chose to flee rather than submit to a trial he deemed unjust.[1]
The burning of Gorodishche
[edit]On the night of 14 June 2035, Zelski rowed a small boat from Gorodishche with his wife and two children. To prevent Ulmarkan patrols from pursuing them to the border, Zelski ignited the village's granary and barns from a distance using fire arrows. The blaze consumed the settlement before dawn, destroying stored grain that could have fed thousands during the coming winter. Zelski did not attempt to return; he sailed west toward the Ulmarka border, disappearing into the fog of the North Sea.[2] His family survived by hiding in marshes along the coast until the war ended in 2041.
The Nightboat Manifesto
[edit]Zelski's written confession was recovered from a hollowed-out log found drifting on the shore of Vharnhold in January 2037, after he vanished during a severe snowstorm. The document, titled The Nightboat Manifesto, argues
